Gerrard wanted this transfer to happen – have Liverpool missed out on a real bargain?

|

Liverpool, it seems, are back on target. After a fairly terrible start, Brendan Rodgers made it to the January transfer window, snapped up a highly lauded striker and the results have started to arrive.

For the first time in the season Liverpool are looking up the Premier League table to see who they’re going to be overtaking, rather than down at the clubs below. As complacent clubs like Arsenal sit still, the Reds have taken action and this has paid dividends.

But if they want to climb further up the League table, they may well have to take further action in the January transfer market.

After all, Daniel Sturridge hasn’t fixed all the problems in this Liverpool squad and the positive feeling that a 5-0 victory creates can evaporate quickly when similar results fail to materialize.

But who can Liverpool bring in without adding too much burden to the club’s finances?

According to the BBC, Galatasaray’s deal for Sneijder is all wrapped up. Personally, I’m amazed that a Premier League club didn’t come in for Wesley Sneijder. Yes, we’re all well aware that he wants to be well paid, but Inter Milan were willing to sell him at a bargain price. Galatasaray have already had a bid accepted for around £8.3m. Given that he’s one of the best players in a remarkably gifted Dutch International side and one of the best midfielders in world-football, I’d say that’s a fairly decent price.

Steven Gerrard also seems to be keen on the 28-year-old. “He’s a top player we’ve seen at every major tournament, he delivers. He’s done it in the Champions League for years. But we have to see on his wages, the man I think gets paid very well. He’ll have all kinds of options, I’m sure. But I’d like nothing more than to see him in a red shirt. I think he’d be a fantastic player for Liverpool Football Club.’ (Source: Daily Mail)

Whilst Stevie shares many pundit’s concerns regarding his wages, it’s clear that he’d love to see a deal like this go through. He’s the kind of player who could have steered Liverpool up into the top four and give them a proper platform to build on next season. He could have made them competitive once more. If he secured Liverpool Champions League football, he’d have more or less pay for himself.

So I’m with Steven Gerrard on this one – Brendan seems to have missed out on a real bargain. Is there anybody else out there with his quality available at that price?

What’s your take? Can Liverpool do better than Sneijder?

      Well said.

Didn’t Liverpool get Joe Cole for nothing, but on huge wages?
Another point is that not every player can play any team’s system. Man United plays differently than Barcelona and Liverpool does not play like Stoke. See how Charlie Adam plays for Stoke/Blackpool, but he will not fit into our style of play now.
There is lots to consider when signing a player..
Price, Wages, sell-on value; and also where he will play on the field.
Did we like seeing Cole not playing or sitting on the bench given his wages? NO.
We have to be realistic; we do not have the Russian’s Plastic money nor the Arab’s millions.
