After Gary Neville’s brilliant and revealing Monday Night Football discussion about levels of responsibility at Manchester United, it’s easy to feel a little sorry for David De Gea.

He had had an excellent game against Tottenham and had kept his side ahead for the majority of the game with a string of excellent saves. With just minutes to go, he looked to have won United the game and was a strong contender for man of the match.

Unfortunately, one flap at the ball later, followed by a Clint Dempsey finish and David De Gea wiped away all the good feeling. It was a poor clearance from the Spanish goalkeeper and the looks from Nemanja Vidic and Danny Welbeck did not tell a pretty story.

It’s not like United’s defenders covered themselves in glory throughout the whole game. Nonetheless, De Gea has been held accountable for the dropping of 2 points. Whether that’s fair or not, doesn’t seem to be the point.

It’s a difficult atmosphere for a young keeper like him to thrive and his regular mistakes and inability to properly command his area may well cost him his future at Old Trafford.

Why else would stories like this one courtesy of the Daily Express continue to surface? They claim that Sir Alex Ferguson is readying a move for Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.

This is a man who has made 379 appearances for the Merseyside club and is considered to be something of a Liverpool legend. If he were to move to Manchester United, Liverpool fans would be seriously hurt. Wouldn’t that make him the perfect addition?

On a more serious note, it does seem to make sense. Though Pepe Reina’s form has dipped over the last season or two, he’s still one of the Premier League’s best. Arsenal and Barcelona are sniffing around, but he’d fit in best at Old Trafford.

After all, Fergie proved by signing Edwin van der Sar that he knows the value of an older, more experience keeper. The Spanish stopper would provide the leadership at the back that De Gea lacks and would be worthy of the accountability that the rest of the team would grant him.

It’s one of the few areas of weakness within this United squad and Reina would be the perfect way to strengthen it.

What’s your take? Should Sir Alex be in the market for this Liverpool star?

One of the few areas of weakness? RVPs goals are glossing over how average the current man ure team are. I’d be surprised to see them get through the next stage of the champions league.
