Tottenham’s 4-0 routing of Aston Villa puts them on a precipice. Whilst they’re currently above Arsenal in the Premier League table, the truth is: very little separates the two London clubs. If Andres Villas-Boas wants to finish ahead of the Gunners and secure a top four position, he may well have to strengthen in the transfer market.

You can bet that Arsene Wenger will do so. It would be foolish of the Portuguese manager to sit still and let the Frenchman profit from his stagnation.

But Villas-Boas will be faced with a good number of challenges this January. For a start, he’s going to struggle to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United for players’ signatures.

This much is clear from this story, courtesy of The International Business Times. Tottenham are being forced out the market by Chelsea in their pursuit for Shakhtar Donetsk star Willian.

The Brazilian winger, full name, Willian Borges da Silva has been linked to Tottenham on numerous occasions and has previously admitted that he has an affinity for the North London side: “Tottenham are a big club and they have Villas-Boas. I have great affection for this manager. He is always in contact with me and we exchanged messages.” (Quotes from back in October).

The trouble? He isn’t exactly playing coy with Chelsea: “And Chelsea is Chelsea, right? A big club, European champions, with great players. It would be really cool if I play in one of these clubs, important for my career.”

It would be ‘cool’. Willian, at 24-years-old is one of European football’s premier young talents. He’s pacey, direct and tricky. He loves to take defenders on and can cause teams all kinds of problems on the break. In short, he’s the kind of player who could help Tottenham reach the next level and ease the pain when Gareth Bale inevitably moves on.

But here’s the rub: he’s definitely not worth £35m. He’s not better than, say, Eden Hazard, who Chelsea snapped up for a smaller fee. Tottenham shouldn’t be forced out of the competition for his signature by a crazy evaluation.

Andres Villas-Boas has to play hardball and get his man. With Financial Fair Play on the horizon, Chelsea wont want to pay over the odds. Let’s just hope the Portuguese manager comes up trumps.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham duke it out for Willian?

Tottenham (Levy) isn`t about to go into a auction battle with Chelsea for a player, especially one that has a price tag of 35mil. Ok, maybe if said player wants to play for the duration of his contract for free. Dream on.

    COYS!

The only reason Tottenham would buy a player like Willian would be if Gareth Bale or Aaron Lennon were on their way out of the lane or a rich Arab bought us.

No chance levy would even consider paying 35 mill for a player. Drifting into the realms of fantasy

Willian or Eriksen? No contest, Eriksen every time, younger, more used to European football, and a great prospect. Would be ideal for Spurs. If we can also buy Diamo? what a January window that would be!
