Brendan Rodgers must be looking forward to the January transfer window with the same amount of dread as anticipation.

After-all, he needs new players to ease the burden on his current (thread-bare, largely talent free) squad, but there’s very little chance that he’ll be able to bring in the kind of players that will get Liverpool fans believing once more.

In other words, it’s something of a win-lose for Rodgers. Yes, he’ll be able to bring in new players, but he’ll be adding further pressure to his shoulders. Should these newbies fail to perform, Rodgers may well be sent out into the cold.

But there are some players out there available at a decent price that could improve this Liverpool side and help to make it competitive once more.

Take for instance, Lewis Holtby, who Goal.com claim won’t be renewing his Schalke 04 contract, ‘paving the way’ for a potential move to the Reds. His current deal runs until next summer, when he’d be available on a free transfer. Or, Brendan Rodgers could but in a bid this January to attempt to pick him up at a bargain price (when their will also be less competition and it’ll be easier to set a fair wage).

He’s a player that has been linked to Liverpool on a number of occasions, largely because his father was a Liverpool born soldier, who just happened to end up getting stationed in Monchengladbach. His mother is German and Holtby ended up electing to play for Germany at International level, but Holtby still harbours good feeling for English football and has admitted to being an Everton fan in the past.

He’s a player I’m a big fan of. An all-action midfielder, like a young, still-developing Steven Gerrard, with bags of potential and the strength and will-power to make his mark at the top level. He’s supremely confident on the ball, carries it well and can spray it about neatly.

He never hides and can help his side to dominate other midfields. Anybody who saw his performance against Arsenal at the Emirates this season can attest to that.

At just 22-years-old, he’s got a long way to go, but I wouldn’t bet against him making his mark at a top team before long. Let’s just hope it is with Liverpool. If Brendan Rodgers is smart, he may be able to pull off a real bargain.

What’s your take? Would Lewis Holtby be a smart addition at Anfield?
