Wenger vs Pep: is it time for a change at Arsenal?

|

I’ve always been in the pro-Arsene Wenger camp. I’ve always been an admirer of his footballing philosophy and transfer nous, even as these attributes seem to have waxed and waned over the years.

This isn’t an article to say that I’ve joined the Wenger-out troop. Not quite. It’s more an acknowledgement that I’m ready to consider other alternatives.

One way or another, the result against Bradford City on Tuesday night will represent a turning point. It will either mark the moment when Arsene Wenger realized his side cannot cut the mustard and that new additions this January are a must, or the moment that this Arsenal side’s descent out of the top side’s in Europe was solidified.

Arsenal can rise from the ashes, it’s just looking more and more unlikely to happen with every other game.

The puzzling thing is that this side is full to brimming with talented players. Full internationals who have performed at the top level before. There’s no doubting that the likes of Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Mikel Arteta are top players. What’s more, there’s a good smattering of young talent at the club, personified by the likes of Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain.

So why aren’t the club getting the most out of these players? Is it the personnel around them, or the manager setting them up? Many Arsenal fans believe that Arsene Wenger himself is at fault.

They’ll be delighted to have seen Goal’s claim that former Barcelona manager, Pep Guardiola has confessed that he would like to be considered for the manager’s position at Arsenal, should the slot become available next year.

Goal quote a source who says the following: “Guardiola’s preference in England is Arsenal. The club are aware he would be interested in the job in 2013. Guardiola doesn’t want to go to Chelsea. He is worried about the lack of stability. He also has a good relationship with Wenger dating back to when he started doing his coaching badges at Arsenal.”

Now, that, to me, seems like an attractive proposition. I’ve always stuck by Wenger, because I’ve never really believed that Arsenal can do any better. As things currently stand, Pep – the man who guided Barcelona to 14 trophies – looks like a big improvement. These quotes offer a glimmer of hope for Arsenal fans after a bad week.

So whilst I’m not advocating a full-scale result, I can’t deny the thought of change is becoming ever more attractive.

What’s your take? Is it time for Arsenal to turn to Pep?

  • airo says:

Sounds very attractive to have Pep,what he can offer is tactical awareness, which Wenger is lacking, its a hard one because Pep inherited a squad close to its optimum, but at some point arsene will stop,he isn’t going to coach arsenal forever, especially with his contract ending in 2014,the board will have to think about a successor and pep wouldn’t be a bad option

    The answer is….yes!

  • Carlos says:

Absolute rubbish, Pep had an off-season at Barca & went on a sabbatical immediately. It’s up to the players to live up to their standards. They are sure of their wages every week. The players have to believe in & motivate themselves. Arsene is the best because every year he has to rebuild because some players get greedy & leave.

I will be d hapiest person if pep arrived

To me wenger should go is enough.

Wenger builds and makes a team to win , pep inherited the best team In the world , who could go wrong at barca when messi is scoring 50 goals a year , wringer would have a team of world beaters if it wernt for the modern day greedy footballer ( and cesc an exception ) had not left for more cash or grass greener ( not a reality for song on the bench ) winger is the man to turn our season around ( last year an example ) WE are Arsenal and no one loves or has as much passion or will for our team to succeed than wenger , and remember the media love to sell a paper through sensationalising everything as crisis sell papers , united and city went out of the capital one cup before arsenal but no ones whipping up a media storm about that , city and Chelsea didn’t erm make it to the knock out stages of the champions league but arsenal are there again (even tho city have spent 200 mil and the rest on their team , if we get left arsenal barca would be on the phone begging for him to be their manager ( they have been circling for years ) because they know what a great manager wenger is , it’s a shame some arsenal fans have forgotten that fact and the others I have just pointed out , please stick together gunners , get behind the team get behind the manager and support Arsenal through tough times and good that’s what being a fan is all about

Ok wenger is not on my predictive text and I coulda use a read back and a few full stops . 🙂

    • Gundown says:

Arsenal wouldn’t have qualified 4 the next round in the group of chelsea nd city. What wenger achieved in 16yrs Pep did more in less than 4yrs.

  • Samson Okpe says:

Why’re we sentimental about this clear issue.Wenger is declining rapidly except 4 the deaf nd dumb.Almost everything is going wrong at the moment and still, some myopic gunners can’t sense it.Why even think of selling walcot or sagna when the salaries of deadwoods like chamakh, arshavin, squilaci, bendtnar, djourou etc can take care of their pay rise if they’re sold.

  • Ajmi says:

Wenger shd emulate other managers nd honourably quit when the ovation is over.Even great managers like mourinho, van gaal, benites, dalglish,AVB etc all did the right thing at their previous club.An Alex ferguson would’ve resign if man u fails 2 win a tropht in 2 seasons.Arsenal is not wenger’s personal property.

  • Tokunbo says:

Wenger is a fantastic coach no doubt about that, but I think his problem is that he has refused to acknowledge d fact dat football has changed so he has refused to change with it! We have dept in our squad no doubt, but then d players also need to believe in themselves and up their game! We need to bring in some quality players and let some dead ones like Ramsey, Squilacci, djourou, Arshavin, Bendtner, Santos, Chamakh and co leave d club! And YES Pep will be d much needed change!

  • Dr.francis says:

The devil we know is beta than the angel we don’t know….yes….but not in this clear issue on ground.Arsene wenger loves money too much there-by forgeting the joy of the/his fans(trophy).I think we need a change and that change must be done.Yes….we need a change and I don’t think pep. is a bad option, lets try him and see.Had it been there’s no ”bad”,we wouldn’t have known there’s something called ”good” let see pep.’s work and then compare but all the same arsene is a good coach,I must confess but he loves money more than trophy(ies).I think he should go.yes….go..arsene …go..beside he wouldn’t coach arsenal 4 eva.

  • Dr.francis says:

”Arsene wenger should go.yes…go..pep. Should come,we need you”
