Should Arsenal target this La Liga goal-ace for a January transfer?

|

One player who seems to be doing the transfer rounds at the moment is Barcelona’s David Villa. I spoke earlier last week about how he’d make a good fit at Liverpool. Then silly rumours started spreading regarding Villa and Swansea City. Not such a great fit, you’d have to feel.

It’s clear however, that certain elements of the Press feel that Villa is on the way out on the Nou Camp and that’s why he’s getting passed around to all and sundry. I suppose it was only a matter of time before his name was mentioned in conjunction with Arsenal’s and The Daily Mail have done the dirty in this regard.

It’s clear that Arsenal are lacking upfront. With Theo Walcott’s contract set to run down next summer, the Gunners are at risk of having a squad with little depth upfront. Lukas Podolski looks set to play out on the wing, whilst Olivier Giroud creates little threat beyond his heading ability.

The less said about Gervinho, the better.

So Arsenal fans will be hoping that Wenger goes out into the January transfer window and brings back a quality striker. Would they be satisfied with David Villa?

The Mail claims that Barcelona would be willing to let the Spanish striker go, should he indicate his desire to leave. They also note that Villas has become increasingly frustrated with his lack of opportunities at the Nou Camp. He suffered a long-term injury last season and has struggled to ingratiate himself back into the team.

But there’s no denying he’s a world-class talent. This is a man who has scored goals for fun through-out his career. He’s a pacey, mobile striker who always seems to take up smart positions and is a real force when bearing down on goal. He’s been the focal point of both the Barca and Spanish attack for some time now and may feel he’s ready to leave and prove himself in another League.

Still, I’m not sure this is the right move for Arsenal. He’d cost Arsene Wenger a pretty penny and he’s never really been that prone to spending. What’s more and most importantly, Villa is 31-years-old. In footballing terms, that may well signal the start of a steady decline. Soon enough his pace will drop out and other aspects of his game may start to level out.

And that just doesn’t seem like a smart purchase to me. Arsene has to make long-term purchases that immediately improve the first team. A tough challenge no doubt, but Villa certainly doesn’t fit the bill.

What’s your take? Would you have David Villa at Arsenal?

No I dont think we should yes he as been a good player but I did say as . He is also a bit injuiry prone , we should begoing for a mid twenty-player who has 5 years of good football left with a scoring record even if they are in lower division my arguement is once a goal scorer always a scorer
    i.e. Kevin Phillips.

i believe adrian lopez, ricky alvarez or demba ba would be better. all are younger, quicker, smarter, and more physcial than villa. we need to avoid villa and sell walcott
