Should Arsenal smash their transfer record to sign this midfield dynamo?

Whilst it’s been a pretty poor couple of months for Arsenal, three wins on the bounce in the Premier League puts a slightly better complexion on the Gunners plight.

They’re back up to fourth in the Premier League, ahead of their eternal rivals Tottenham. Whilst the football isn’t exactly back to its free-flowing best (though the performance against Reading was pretty tasty) Arsenal now have something to build on.

I only hope that Arsene Wenger doesn’t take these results as evidence that he doesn’t need to spend any money on transfer this January. Because the truth is, Arsenal are in desperate need of some reinforcements.

The weaknesses in this side are there for everybody to see. They lack a decent, effective striker and a quality defensive midfielder.

Francis Coquelin has many fans and he’s sure to have a big future, but you get the feeling that he’s not quite ready for regular appearances at the top of the game. Whilst he’s a tenacious talent, he has a rather slight frame and doesn’t really impose himself on the midfield.

Arsenal need a physical presence to compliment the technical ability of Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla. At the moment it’s oozing creativity, but largely lacking in effectiveness because the Gunners can’t control the play in the key areas of the pitch. A midfield enforcer would prevent play breaking down so easily and help Arsenal to win the ball back when they lose it.

Arsene Wenger sold Alex Song to Barcelona last season and didn’t replace him. This was a mistake – almost as big a mistake as selling the world’s best striker, Robin Van Persie to their rivals, Manchester United.

And now ClubCall have linked the Gunners to Everton’s ace midfielder, Maroune Fellaini. There’s no doubting that the big Belgium has a real presence. The 25-year-old is 6 foot 4 inches tall and his hair probably adds another four or so inches. He’s a powerful, competitive figure who adds plenty of bite to the Everton midfield. Best of all, he’s a technically gifted player. He certainly wouldn’t look out of place at Arsenal, playing alongside the likes of Santi Cazorla.

ClubCall also claim that the Gunners may be scared off by the Belgium’s £25m price-tag. Well let’s hope not. He’s exactly the kind of player Arsenal need and Arsenal need him now.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal splash the cash for Marouane Fellaini?

I really do not think Arsenal should spend that money on Fellaini. I would prefer Celtic’s midfield enforcer Victor Wanyama

The manger and the board have the last, we only speculate?

  • Parick Ssekatawa says:

You’ve said it all. Fellaini is a must-buy! Really. If I were Wenger, I would sanction his purchase without having to blink, even if he would cost 30m! In fact there were 30m to spend this transfer window, much as we need a striker, I would happily spend it all on the Giant Belgian!

I also hear Reading are about to conclude a deal to buy Arshavin for 4m. That money plus some other 6m or so from the sales of Chamakh and Santos would help in the signing of Demba Ba, who according to L’equip will arrive at the Emirates on January 1st.

If Fellaini and Ba sign, I’m sure we can win the league THIS SEASON!!!

So how exactly does an attaking player replace a defensive one, great article

25 million pounds on one player? Wenger will have bad dreams

  • Tinnywest says:

I wish we could but we wont.

  • Laz says:

I’m not so sure about Fellaini. Sure he’s a good player for Everton and has ventured further forward for the this term. Would he see himself as a defensive screen or holding midfielder? Also, his aggression means you can never be guaranteed he’ll see out a game without a dismissal. I suppose Vieira was quite similar in that regard so we’ll see how it plays out..it’d probably be more likely that AW would look to Ligue 1 for inspiration..Yann M’vila or Etienne Capoue anyone?

  • Taiwo adeyemi says:

Goog buy 25m is not 2 mush if wenge can go 4 him, marry xmass 2 all gunners fansssss

  • Smudger says:

If Clubcall reported it I’m sure it will definitely happen.

  • LB says:

I have stated for the last few months that Fellanni is just what Asrenal need in their mid-field, along with Mbwia from Montpelia to sure up the back.
We also could do with either Lopez, Llorienta or Huntelaar to add to attack ( Huntelaar is not gonna happen now, though ).

And we must work hard to offload several players from the wage books.

  • Tom says:

If Wenger bought Feleini he’d probably play him out of position trying to mould him into something he’s not. For 25 million ? , not a chance!!!!!!!

  • MistaKen says:

Lorente and Fellaini are what we need but wont get any of them – sigh

  • kokone says:

The sale of Nasri(24m),Fabregas(35m), Song(15m) and RVP(24)can easily support Fellaini buyout clause. Can Wenger assume Fellaini as Nasri replacement????? Come on Wenger. Get rid of your “profit profit” mentality.

  • Roland C Rozario says:

Arsenal should just get at least 2 v.good players for 25mil…. in stead of putting it for Fellaini. He should be a miss!
Adrian Lopez, Lloriente and even Demba are v.good prospects in the Arsenal mould!

  • dev says:

Le french frog will never buy high profile or expensive players such as Fellaini. Le French frog knows the moment he spends money he will be expected to produce result. Le french frog is one cunning parasite earning 7million a year but feeds delusional gunners bullshit such as tippy tappy football and ze mental strength.

  • James gunner says:

Wenger says he will only sign exceptional players. We fans really don’t know wht he means. We do know there are flaws in the team.Beating Reading and Wigan aint like beating some big team. He shdn’t be carried away by these results.
If not it will be time wasted. Some time ago he refused to get anyone saying he had some top players coming back from injury. He better know finishing 4ht aint good enough especially if red faced were to win the cl.
