Back on track. At least that’s how things seem. Arsenal’s 5-2 thrashing of their North London rivals (who were, admittedly, down to 10 men) looks set to spur them on this season. Last year it triggered a revival in fortune for the Gunners. Fans will be hoping that a similar effect is generated this time round.

But whilst an emphatic win over Tottenham is never a bad thing, it doesn’t magically erase all of the Gunner’s problems. This is the same team that got turned over by Manchester United and were held to a 3-3 draw by Fulham at the Emirates. There’s plenty of work to be done. Indeed, Arsene Wenger would be crazy not to take advantage of the transfer window when it re-opens this January.

For what it’s worth I feel that the Gunners could use a quality left-back, another world-class striker with genuine pace (to keep Giroud on his toes) and finally, a decent goal-keeper.

Arsenal fans must be sick to the teeth of seeing the likes of Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone pulling on the number one jersey. Despite finally managing to get rid of Manuel Almunia, two more little terrors has sprung up in his place. Fabianski looks nervous and jittery whenever he’s on the pitch and Mannone doesn’t look like he has the quality to succeed at the Emirates.

Only Wojciech Szczesny grants Arsenal any hope for the future. The young Pole has a great attitude and is a fine shot-stopper. Experience is likely to turn him into a real star, though I’d argue he’s not quite there yet. Mistakes are still a regular part of his game. He’s rash, petulant and makes poor decisions. He will learn, but I think it will help him to have a quality goalkeeper providing him with some competition.

Which brings me to this rumour, courtesy of Sport 1: it’s claimed that Arsene is tempted by €6m Dutch International keeper Kenneth Vermeer. It’s now a widely established fact that good goalies don’t come cheap. Signing an International (albeit one with only a single cap) for that kind of price must surely represent something of a bargain. At 26-years-old, Ajax star Vermeer would come with plenty of experience and should give Szczesny a run for his money.

He wouldn’t necessarily be a first choice player in this Arsenal team, but that’s a good thing. He and Szczesny would never be too far off of each other. They would inspire each other and maintain consistency. Isn’t that exactly what Arsenal need?

What’s your take? Would Vermeer be a good signing for Arsenal?
