A £16m transfer that doesn’t make sense: but should Manchester United go for it anyway?

Polish forward Robert Lewandowski has rocketed up the ranks in world football and is now amongst the best in Europe.

After years in the Polish League with the likes of Delta Warsaw, Legia Warsaw and Znivcz Pruszkow, he made a dream move to Borussia Dortmund. The move would end up being massively beneficial for both club and player.

Last season he nabbed 30 goals for Dortmund in 47 appearances and helped lead his side to their second consecutive Bundesliga title. This year he already has 8 goals in 17 appearances (in a Dortmund side that aren’t quite as fluid in Germany as they were last season). At the moment, he’s unstoppable in front of goal.

You can see why Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is so interested in him. The Mirror claim that United were willing to pay £16m for the 24-year-old last summer. They also suggest that Fergie is keeping close tabs on Lewandowski’s contract situation with Dortmund.

His current deal will run out in summer 2014, but Dortmund are keen to tie him down on a long term basis. Aki Watzke, Dortmund’s chief executive has chimed in on the situation, noting that: “We will sit down and discuss what to do next if Robert does not extend his contract”.

That’s all well and good, but you can bet that if he doesn’t agree new terms, Ferguson will perk up. He has an unnatural obsession with signing new strikers. Last season he was spoilt for choice when it came to forwards and had to leave the likes of Dimitar Berbatov on the bench. How did he react?

Why, by signing the world’s best striker, Robin Van Persie, of course. It made no sense at the time, but it proved to be an astute decision. Manchester United must now surely be the favourites for the title – largely thanks to the Dutchman’s goals.

So yes, there’s no logical reason for Sir Alex to go after another striker when he already has Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in tow. But do I believe he would go after Lewandowski? Absolutely.

Manchester United could use another midfielder, but bolstering in forward areas has never led the Red Devils astray before.

A small side note however: If another striker does arrive at Old Trafford, Danny Welbeck will have to go on loan. He has a future at the club, but there’s just too much competition at the moment.

What’s your take? Would it make sense to purchase Robert Lewandowski this season?
