Whenever I get into a conversation about European football, the same question always arises. What is the best Football league, La Liga, or the Premier League? Certainly the two most prolific football leagues. Both are home to some of the very best players in the world. The likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, Chelsea and FC Barcelona are always household names in European football. But for me, the answer is neither football league.

The answer has to be the Bundesliga. With average attendance figures more than 10,000 stronger than the Premier League, four different champions in the last eight years, the German football is truly the most competitive, entertaining league in Europe.

Everyone’s heard that for the price of Arsenal’s most expensive match day ticket, you could buy a season ticket for Bayern Munich. This incredible fact shouldn’t be undermined, as Bayern Munich host a selection of top class players. Arjen Robben, Frank Ribéry and Mario Gómez could walk into any football team in the world and play for the starting XI. Their closest rivals too, Borussia Dortmund, are currently running riot in European football, defeating the great Real Madrid at home and drawing away, as well as defeating Manchester City, who have pumped millions and millions into buying the very best players from around the world.

It’s not just the teams that make the Bundesliga special. It’s the way in which the League is run. Football teams are owned partly by the football fans themselves, which prevents sky-rocketing ticket prices, empty seats in stadiums, and curates an all round greater respect towards footballers than we see here in England.

Another great aspect of the German League is that many of the players are born and raised in Germany. Top teams like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund make up most of the national team, with the likes of Phillip Lahm, Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Götze, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels to name a few. Germany in national football are a great team, and are certainly a credit to the country. My bet was on for them to win the Euros and for Gomez to be the top goalscorer didn’t pay off, but they came close with a Semi-final finish, (Gomez just missing out on the golden boot, thanks to Fernando Torres of Spain.)

As the attendance figures in stadiums across Germany continue to increase, we can see how much the Bundesliga has improved over the years, teams still perform in the Champions League and the Europa League, and the German fans are still an example to us all of how to respect the players and the game. With Bayern Munich currently at the top of the table, the Bundesliga looks set to be another fierce competitive season.

The best league in Europe? Most definitely.
