Would this be €45m poorly spent by Manchester United?

|

In recent times, there’s been plenty of speculation linking FC Porto’s prodigious Colombian James Rodriguez and Manchester United.

I have to say, I’m not entirely sure why this is. Yes, I get that he’s a talented young player, but don’t United have more pressing concerns?

They have an aging and crippled defence, that has increasingly started to leak goals. Rio Ferdinand looks a shadow of his former self and Nemanja Vidic looks like he’ll struggle to ever obtain full-fitness. There’s also Patrice Evra, who is increasingly becoming a liability.

Then there’s the midfield, where age is also becoming an issue. The likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs just can’t go on forever and there doesn’t seem to be any kind of contingency plan in place. I’m sure Manchester United fans would rather see the club’s cash getting invested in a world-class central midfielder, before Sir Alex spends it on another striker.

After all, United look pretty secure up front. £24m man Robin Van Persie has proven that he’s the best striker in the world since joining Old Trafford, effortlessly transferring his Arsenal scoring form to his new team. Then there’s Wayne Rooney, who despite the criticism in recent times, is undeniably up there with Europe’s best.

Indeed, Sir Alex was so confident with his attack, that he was willing to let both Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov leave last summer. This was no doubt to give the likes of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck more opportunities this season.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that James Rodriguez has a €45m release clause written into his contract. With FC Porto in a position of power, with no reason why they have to sell him, Manchester United would have to fork out a significant sum to earn his signature. The exciting talent has already commented on the link:

“We all know that England and Manchester United are a great club, that the Premier League is a great league, but I am only thinking about Porto now.” (Source: GiveMeFootball)

The fact that he’s commenting on the situation, seems to suggest that there’s something to the rumours. Whilst I understand that United always like to keep track of Europe’s best young players, I can’t help but hope Fergie doesn’t splash the cash here.

By Christmas wish-list includes a top defender and a fantastic midfielder. What’s on your list?

Should Manchester United snap up James Rodriguez or place their focus elsewhere?

i hope he buys Vidal and Tiote. And in defense Hummels. That fixes all our problems. Hoping smalling and jones step up. Buttner and Fabio keep up.
