Why the time’s right for Arsenal to pounce for this La Liga ace:

Arsenal’s biggest surprise thus far this season has been the way that Gervinho has adjusted to his role as a striker. Whilst he’s still got a tendency to do the unpredictable (not in a good way – he seems to be on a completely different wavelength to his teammates) his finishing has improved and he’s already grabbed four goals this season. The way he took his goal against Chelsea was particularly impressive, slamming it into the roof of the net, giving Petr Cech no chance.

But the Gunners’ biggest disappointment thus far must surely be Olivier Giroud. The French hitman was brought into add force to an attack that had just lost Robin Van Persie. Unfortunately, last season’s Ligue 1 top scorer just can’t seem to find the back of the net. Beyond a sweet finish against Coventry City, Giroud just can’t seem to find his feet in the Premier League. And it’s costing Arsenal big time – the Gunners need to score more goals if they’re going to compete for the Premier League this season.

So, I can’t help but hope that Arsene Wenger goes out and buys another striker this January. They need reinforcements in this department and we know that the club has enough money.

And now the latest news from Spain is that Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has had a big training ground fall out with his manager, Manuel Bielsa. Reports suggest that Llorente ended up walking out of the session with an hour remaining. It’s unknown exactly what happened, but the big forward can’t be happy with the fact that he’s yet to record a La Liga start this season (Source: Ladbrokes).

The fact that he’s thus far been unwilling to extent his Athletic Bilbao contract surely plays into Bielsa’s decision not to play him. The fact that he’s yet to put pen to paper must also be why he’s attracted so much interest from European clubs. That, and his enviable footballing ability. The tall, tough striker has a real physical presence in combination with his goal-scoring prowess. He’s capable of bullying defenders and looks to be a natural goal-scorer. The full-package.

He’s also unlike any other Arsenal player in that he offers a more physical, powerhouse approach (I don’t think Giroud is capable of offering this). His release clause is reportedly around £28m and I’d say that makes him a bargain.

What’s your take? Would he be a smart addition at the Emirates?
