Writing this directly after the transfer window has slammed shut, I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool fans have the most reason to be aggrieved. In fact, now that we can assess the transfer window as a whole for the Reds, I think we can say that it’s been an unmitigated disaster.

Liverpool, a club with no much history, ambition and class now find themselves considerably worse off than there were before the transfer window opened. You thought last season was bad? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

At least Liverpool fans enjoyed their cup runs last season. But this time round, I just can see this squad putting in a concerted effort in any competition. The squad’s just not deep enough and there’s not enough quality there. We all remember how difficult it was for the Reds to score last season.

The solution? Selling Dirk Kuyt and loaning out Andy Carroll whilst bringing in Fabio Borini a 21-year-old footballer with limited experience at the top level. It’s hardly enough to fill you with confidence. Even if Suarez steps it up in terms of goals this season, Liverpool are going to struggle. If Suarez gets injured, it’s pretty much season over for Brendan Rodgers.

All of which makes the club’s decision to loan Andy Carroll out to West Ham look absolutely bananas. The logic just doesn’t stack up. Liverpool need strikers and Andy Carroll looked to be improving towards the end of last season. Now the Reds are an option down and will likely struggle as a result.

The fact that Liverpool couldn’t afford to compete (or didn’t want to dedicate the funds) for Clint Dempsey is telling. He’s not an out-and-out striker, but he would have got them goals. Instead, for the second time this summer, the Reds have been outbid by Tottenham football club – a team who made smart additions on deadline day.

I’m not here to point fingers, especially not at Brendan Rodgers, who wouldn’t have had any say in Liverpool’s budget. He’s clearly playing for the mistakes of Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli, which is a real shame.

The truth is, it seems that the only way for Liverpool from now on is down. That’s a shame for a club that has such a great support and really deserves better. Fingers crossed that Suarez has the season of his life and that Borini adapts quickly. But don’t hold your breath.

What’s your take? Have Liverpool had their second nightmare summer in a row?

    We’re DOOMED.

    • Andrew says:

Yep. Relegation. Relegation. Relegation here we come. Gulp. What bothers me most is that we have shipped seven goals in three matches. For a side that cant score goals we are looking a long painful year.

  • boon says:

Wathed the game with horrors at the rate we lost the ball on so many occasions. SG, Borrini, Suarez, Glen all lost the balls. SG lost the ball which costed us the first goal, and Glen as usual provided poor cover at LB. Sickening to watch us losing home games now.. We are heading for relegation zone soon… There is no team spirit upfront. Sahin didnt quite have a game. Allen did a good job. Enrique had no idea what to do.. The only bright spark was Saheem, surprising. Bring back Owen. Suarez cannot run at defenders forever.

  • jonesy says:

Lets be honest and blunt: Suarez plays for himself and will never be a top goal scorer. We will win nothing while he is around.
Borini looks a total waste of £11m.
Our attack is the worst in the PL. Its embarrassing and depressing to watch them labour away. Fact: 3 PL games and zero goals from open play.
In fact after 5 competitive games only one player has scored from open play.
But don’t worry guys we still have Ian Ayre working for us.

    • Voland says:

Suarez is a fantastic player for Liverpool already – all he needs is the right partner in attack to get goals flowing for Liverpool. From what we have seen up to now, whether it’s a question of position or the player himself, the Borini solution is not an immediate fix.

When Rodgers himself makes the case for needing 1-2 players to come in to “help the team” before the end of the transfer window, it is rather hard to be hopeful that things will straighten themselves out on their own.

      • jonesy says:

Suarez is a massive prima donna with a terrible attitude. Watching him dive and appeal for fouls constantly is embarrassing and indefensible. He seems to need re-educating in what the game is about and what the role of a striker is. We will win nothing with his attitude.
A fantastic player would have scored at least 1 goal from open play this season (hell he missed 3 sitters at WBA alone).
He is no Rush, Fowler, Aldo or Owen.

  • Voland says:

Nothing is inevitable. FSG have got a number of calls wrong since coming in, but all it takes is the right manager and timely support in the transfer market. Brendan Rodgers may prove to be a great manager for Liverpool Football Club – and there is surely no Liverpool fan who will not support Rodgers all the way.

However, results are results, and there is a proven alternative waiting in the wings and able to step in at short notice. His name? Rafa Benitez, the man who should have been brought back to Liverpool from the off once FSG decided to fire Roy Hodgson.

  • shada says:

wow, Rogers has really fucked up, the buck stops with him , he is in-charge. Getting rid of kuyt bellamy and Carroll is the actions of an idiot.

  • james says:

liverpool played suck.. all the players played like sleeping or zombie.. don’t know where the ball just like bull keep running and running.. no quality striker can’t score goal.. just like last session, this session liverpool will relegate … botton 3… no money always said no money.. just sold all the star player since next session will playing in divison 1… so american owner will be very happy this is their goal .. and will have a lot of money when they sell their star player.. balance all the account. good luck liverfool forever fool…

  • Bob says:

Looks like there is no hope for Liverpool to actually get to the top four. They still have the curse of not being able to get the ball into the net. Liverpool can’t just depend on Stevie G and Suarez to do all the scoring and assists. I feel sad for Brendan Rodgers. Can any manager bring back the golden years to Liverpool?

  • shaun says:

watched the game my conclusion is liverpool are going down this season played 3 lost 2 drawn 1 cant see were goals are going to come from needed a striker didnt get 1 sold kuyt loaned carrol reina gone right off losing ball to often leaking goals total garbage sack br bring back rb only hope liverpool have got fsg got it wrong again.

  • F. Lopez says:

Great! I wish this continues until BR get the sack. He will learn how to treat the previous manager’s recruits with dignity. How did BR sold Adam for £4m and buy Borini for thrice as much. He is definitely not three times better than Adam. BR, please resign now before you do any further harm to the club. Else “be on the first plane back” to a mid-table team.

  • rango says:

FSG appointed Rodgers because he is a yes man and will not protest and rant, if they wanted Rafa they would have given him the job and Rafa would not tolerate them.
They have not urn out to be better than the previous yanks who atleast spent their $ to buy Torres who these yanks sold and used his money to buy crap.
Kenny should have been given more time.
If you get Swanseas manager and best player, try to play like them, you will end up like them fighting relegation.
Today Arsenal showed the Barca wannabees how tiki taka football is actually played.

  • Mike says:

FSG got three major calls wrong.

    1. They should never have hired damian comolli, especially as it was a baseball person that suggested him. I’m sure they now realize that football is light-years away from other sports. You just have to spend, as there are too many clubs to compete with!

    2. Should have hired Benitez upon Dalglish’s dismissal. I really don’t understand their obsession with fluid barca style football. Now, i’m not for negativity, but, fergie and mourinho are not adherents of the Barca model, yet have enourmous success. Undwr Rafa, we had an identity: well-organized, can move the ball conveniently on the ground amd can do the direct play. It’s all a matter of winning (not winning ugly at all times, but sometimes)
    3. FSG should be prepared to bankroll a minimum of £45m in January, and another £85m come summer or sell up to Prince Al-Waleed Al-Saud.

As an afterthought, henderson, reina, enrique, skrtel, carragher, downing, borini must not start next season with the squad. They must be replaced by; radamel falcao, jack butland, mats hummels, gaston ramirez, leighton baines, andy carroll, leroy fer, arda turan.

  • Grem says:

What does it say when our best player is a 17year old and Allen. We can keep these two, Skrtel, Agger and Suarez. The rest can go. SG has past it.
