Thanks to the demise of the SPL, will Rangers have the last laugh?

It appears that the Rangers fans needed a sense of humour when the Falkirk PA announcer called Rangers Sevco over the PA system. Rangers supporters complained, and threatened with a financial boycott, the Falkirk board silenced the voice of Falkirk. But perhaps it is the SPL that doesn’t get the joke. It seems that if reports in the Daily Mail are true, Rangers are to be fast tracked into a second-tier SPL.

The Mail reports that the SFA’s Stewart Regan revealed that a league shake-up is planned for next season, which could see Rangers fast-tracked to the second tier of Scottish football. This is not so much a joke as a cheap gimmick to try and keep the paying public on board. It will not work. Why would Rangers want to re-join a group so openly hostile to them?

Stewart Reagan must have skin as thick as a crocodile if he thinks the Rangers support would go near anything involving him. The SFA and Regan are tainted to the Rangers support and while Regan is in charge, there is no chance of reconciliation.

This has the murky fingerprints of Peter Lawwell, the Celtic CEO all, over it. This is more about Peter Lawwell and the fight for the survival of Celtic. Let’s not be fooled that he is doing this out of the good of Scottish football. He has no choice. When Lawwell is scurrying around England trying to sell a product that no one wants, he should remember the SPL has jumped the shark. A league without competition is dead. Therefore the clubs that play in that league are dead. The SPL is teetering on the edge of insolvency and still owes the Scottish Football League money. The SPL is going the way of VHS and the Mini Disc and no amount of a laugh track will make this joke funny.

The fact that the SPL would consider asking Rangers back just shows how desperate and out of touch Stewart Reagan, Peter Lawwell and the rest of the cabal are. Rangers supporters have turned their backs on the SPL teams. There is no longer any desire to play these teams.  This includes Celtic. The fans of Rangers are happy with where they find themselves. This is the real punch line that no one expected.
