Whether or not you feel that Manchester United could use an additional body in the centre of their midfield, I’m sure that this story/rumour will amuse you.

Remember that Spanish fella that used to play for Arsenal before his scampered back to Barcelona to play for his hometown club? The youngster who at ‘17’ was deemed ‘better than Roy Keane’? Well, he’s been linked to a move for Manchester United.

Indeed, The Guardian have claimed that Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Cesc Fabregas’ situation at Barcelona. I’ve heard some downright loopy rumours in my time, but this one just about takes the biscuit. It’s a good excuse to use that great picture of a young, mulleted Cesc though.

Fabregas has made it clear that he loves two clubs: Arsenal and Barcelona. He loves and respects Arsene Wenger and would likely consider moving to Manchester United something of a betrayal. He’s not like Robin Van Persie, he still shares affinity with Arsenal fans and won’t want to let them down. There’s basically no chance of him moving to Old Trafford. Utter bunkum.

The reason all these Fabregas rumours persist is because of his current role at the Camp Nou. Whilst he enjoyed plenty of game time under Pep Guardiola, Barca’s new head coach Tito Vilonova has used him more sparingly. Naturally, the young Spaniard has grown a little impatient with his role on the sidelines.

But to claim that he’d forgo his values and leave the club he holds dearest to join United seems a step to far. I can understand why the media would link him back to Arsenal. He has a history there. But apart from the Robin Van Persie connection, there’s nothing for Fabregas at Manchester United.

I do think, however, that United could use a player of Cesc’s quality and type: a midfielder who can work space for himself and pass the ball about quickly and accurately. The truth is, there’s currently nobody in this United side who can offer this and that’s why they’ve been linked to the likes of Wesley Sniejder and Luka Modric for the last couple of summers.

The Cesc link is revealing only in the sense that it’s clear that Manchester United still have some work to do in this department. Whoever the solution is, remains unclear, but you can bet it won’t be Cesc Fabregas.

Who would you bring in to fill Manchester United’s midfield void?

Take the biscuit? … and the cake as well!
Fabregas to United? Absolutely no chance!
Fabregas is a decent player but he has been exposed as just ‘better than some’ with his cameo performances for Barca. His style was good for Arsenal but then who else did they have to control the play? He is lucky to get a game at Camp Neu and when he does, he hardly sets the world alight.
So sorry all those media hacks who have been conned into believing this was a ‘real’ story, it wasn’t and it will never happen just like the Sneijder for United rumours!
