Has Arsene Wenger earned a new Arsenal contract?

Given the fast paced nature of football, players and managers tend to be judged on their present success, rather than the trajectory and achievements of their entire career. Whether this is fair or not, is somewhat beside the point: it’s not going to change any time soon. It’s why Sir Alex Ferguson is a greater manager than Arsene Wenger and why Liverpool decided they could afford to loan Andy Carroll this season.

But past glories do count for something. Why else would Arsenal offer Arsene Wenger a new contract? (Source: ESPN). The Gunners’ chief has struggled in earnest to bring success to the Emirates. Unfortunately, it’s been a battle that he has thus far failed to win. Not since 2006 did Arsenal last pick-up any silverware.

Yet the club has seen fit to offer Arsene a new contract. It seems less a reward for work well done and more a confession: ‘we couldn’t get any one better’. But was it the right decision, or will the Gunners come to regret it?

Yes, it’s been a while since Arsene last won a trophy, but does that seriously dent his reputation as one of the best managers of all time? I don’t think so. His achievements, his footballing advancements and his philosophy have helped to mould the club into the powerhouse it is today. Sure, success hasn’t been forthcoming, but Arsene has kept the club competitive, even when the financial situation looked tricky. This alone is somewhat remarkable.

Besides, ask yourself the question: is anybody more likely to win silverware again with Arsenal than Arsene Wenger? I highly doubt it. Nobody knows the club better, nobody knows this set of players better and very few managers have his footballing knowledge.

Those that want him out would likely want to see a manager come in who wouldn’t be afraid to loosen the purse strings and spend big. But whilst I’d like to see another striker join the club, I don’t think this is necessary. Arsene is in full control of the financial situation and to switch things up at the top may result in the Gunners losing their firm grounding.

The fact is, Arsenal offering Arsene Wenger another contract just makes sense. There’s nobody out there that knows the club better. Arsene himself has admitted he’s ‘an Arsenal man’, unlike say… Robin Van Persie. So let’s hope he gets that new contract and then goes on to prove he deserved it. Not vice-versa.

What’s your take? Were Arsenal right to offer Wenger a new contract? Or is it time to move on?

The usual hogwash concerning Arsene Wenger,so how
does the author of this blog manage to contradict
himself so many times in his article,Wenger has,nt
won any trophies since 2006 he knows it so do many Arsenal fans, there are a few managers out there who could do a better job than Arsene,as long as it,s not an Englishman who get,s the job, time to bring in a new manager preferrably
sooner rather than later, where to find this man
ager in Serie A (Italy ) and La Liga (Spain )?

Noone could do better at Arsenal at the moment. Mourinho would not have won anything either during last 6 years. He is a great manager but requires a lot of money to succeed. If he had to make do with the funds that AW has we would be mid table. Deffo deserves new contract!
