The smartest transfer Liverpool could make?

By now it’s almost an accepted fact that this Liverpool side is not yet fit to compete. Despite making additions to his squad over the summer, Brendan Rodgers was clearly working within a tight budget. Whilst these new players make start to contribute more over time, their influence has hardly catapulted the Reds back into the big time. Inspiration may have to come from the outside.

With that in mind, the January transfer window must be looking awfully far off for Liverpool. Will the Reds be able to stay within touching distance of a top four spot before making some smart additions when the window re-opens? Can they save their season?

We can perhaps also wonder: can Liverpool even afford to spend on new players this January? With that in mind, this transfer rumour looks particularly enticing.

According to reports in Turkey, former Chelsea loan star Ricardo Quaresma could leave Besiktas for free. It has also been claimed that this may force Liverpool to re-ignite their interest.

Besktas board member Tamer Kiran has commented on Quaresma’s situation at the club: “Despite being contracted to the club, we do not see a future for Quaresma here. We wish to part ways with Quaresma, we want to find him a new club. Quaresma will not be rejoining the squad, we have no plans to introduce him back into the team at a later date either.”

The dispute is said to be over Quaresma’s unwillingness to take a wage-cut. Isn’t this a perfect opportunity for Liverpool to swoop in and pick up a quality player at a bargain price?

He’s a fully-fledged Portuguese International, who has played for Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea (5 times). He’s got some real pedigree. He’s got a fiery attitude and ability to match. He’s pacey and direct and can cause defenders real problems. With the likes of Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing failing to influence, Quaresma may be the solution.

Liverpool fans may feel that they’re scrapping the barrel here, but considering his depth of experience, his ability and his price-tag, they could do a lot worse. In fact, it could end up being the smarted signing the Reds have made in two-or-three years.

What’s your take? Would Quaresma be a good addition at Anfield, or should Brendan Rodgers steer clear?

While it would be nice to see a few new signings especially a striker I think we could manage the season as we are, I believe the goals will come, not prolifically but enough to see us in mid-table by Christmas and finishing in the top 8 by the end of the season. Some of the kids deserve the chance and with a “no pressure to finish top 4” attitude we could bring them on quite a lot for future seasons.
