The £7m midfield saviour that Arsenal never knew they were looking for?

The levels of buzz concerning Celtic youngster Victor Wanyama continue to grow. As does his list of suitors. The Kenyan has a attracted a list of interested clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal, QPR and Stoke.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who only provide the bare minimum in terms of detail. It’s not clear how much truth there is to this story, but he is believed to have grown increasingly concerned with where he’s deployed at Celtic. He views himself as a defensive midfielder, but Neil Lennon has often deployed him as a defender.

You wonder also, whether the forthcoming lack of competition in the Scottish Premier League will tempt players to join other Leagues. Talent like Wanyama are likely to be the first ones out.

My question is as follows. Should Arsenal be interested in the 21-year-old, or do they have bigger fish to fry in the transfer market?

The Mail value him at £7m and that’s just the kind of price-tag that you can imagine Arsene Wenger swooning over. Whether he has the talent to make it at a club like Arsenal is another matter entirely.

Arsenal’s midfield is fairly packed out as things stand. Even discounting injured stars Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky (I should probably include Abou Diaby on that list too, right?) there’s still Alex Song, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin, Emmanuel Frimpong and others to fill the void.

The depth in this area of the squad saw Wenger turn down the opportunity to sign Yann M’Vila from Rennes, so it doesn’t make much sense that he should then seek to sign an inferior player (sorry Celtic fans!)

He’s definitely got potential. He may go on to be a world-beater. But as things stand Wanyama doesn’t have enough experience to be counted on to perform week-in and week-out. Alex Song, on the other hand, has come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons. He’s a rugged footballer who’s unafraid to put his foot in, but he’s also capable of getting creative and joining Arsenal’s attack.

In short, he’s exactly the kind of player that Arsene Wenger likes. And I’m not sure that Wanyama is. So perhaps the Gunners should leave this one to Stoke and QPR?

    SHAME ON YOU HARRY.

  • Declan says:

You say Victor is inferior to M’villa, can I ask how many times you have seen both players to make that judgement? I have seen Victor play every game for Celtic including 2 against Rennes where he dominated M’Villa and the frenchman was sent off in one of them. Victor has many rough edges but I am sure he can play effectively for Arsenal, maybe the 2 Manchester clubs or Chelsea would be a step too far.

  • paranoidandroid says:

Your right Harry, he’s not good enough, week in, week out, for your all-conquering, magnificent premiership. We’ll hang on to him.

  • Douglas says:

Why dont you call this site …”this is rangers futbol????????????

  • Raymy says:

I wish it would stop being touted that he is unhappy at being placed at centre back. Pure nonsense. It’s not been said anywhere except in a newspaper column. Minus source of course. But it is “believed”. Not here it ain’t.

  • gerry says:

Is Wanyama really inferior to M’Villa though? I watched celtic beat Rennes 3-1 last season, Wanyama in our engine room, M’Villa in theres. He could not influence the match in the manner Wanyama was, and eventualy got sent off late in the second half.

  • We nid hm bcoz of injuries,i thnk he can add smthng in our squad.

were on earth did the figure 7 million come from , do you not want to buy both of his legs ? this young and extremely talented guy is as good as I have seen and I have seen a few in my 50 years , if he was already playing in England you could put a 2 in front of that 7 and no body would complain .yes he would be exactly what arsenal require but he will come at a price my friends as Glasgow Celtic know exactly what they have as they do with Gary hooper who they bought for 2 million and who was a better striker stat wise in the same league for 2 seasons than your English euro striker who was sold to Liverpool for a fee that would have purchased the whole Celtic squad ,still coming over the border to pillage , put up or shut up !!!
15 million and that will still prove a great buy in todays market for a very classy player indeed

lets giv d kid a try if d price slim down a bit cos his position is filled

like arsenal are full of consistent performers , maybe you should look through there results for the last couple of years you clown ! yann m villa a better player than victor ,no chance ! maybe you should have watched Celtic v inter Milan last week big mouth !!! this is the sort of rubbish you would expect to here on a playground , never let the truth get in the way of a good story , you certainly have all the credentials to manage Newcastle united should there muppet leave !!! toon army have been up and down that league like a yo yo since i was a kid and now pardew cannot shut his mouth and seems to get off on calling celtic fc , what have they ever won !!! baboon army

  • Abz says:

I couldn’t agree more. Even though we’ve been linked with him I believe that with the lack of experience it wouldn’t make any difference at all if he came to Arsenal. If United are linked with him then let then take him we’ve got enough in that department. Just sign Mamadou Sakho and finish up on Santi Cazorla’s deal and we should get going. We need to get rid of Squilacci, Djourou, Chu Young Park, Bendtner and maybe Arshavin although the manager having mentioned he may have future with us. Pretty much I don’t mind if he stays or goes as he still has the potential to bring back his ability and fight gervinho for his places.

  • OldRossCo says:

I think they should go for M’Villa.
He is more expensive, so that proves he is quality
    AND
He’s French, so it is a no-brainer really.
That Wanyama looks good on TV, but I bet he is not that good in real life…..

    • stuart says:

please let old ross co write more on here about trick camera work ect , i am going to cancel the comedy channel on my tv tomorrow !!!

    • tam b says:

olrosscCo you don’t half talk a load of shit like most arrogant english i have seen both players in the flesh wanyama is 21 m’vila is 29 and at this stage of his development big vic is a far better player if vic was playing anywhere bar scotland you woul be looking to pay 30 million + for him but because he plys his trade in scotland you look down your fucking arrogant noses so stick your 7million up your arses it’s not enough

  • stuart says:

yes like old ross says he looks good on tv but i bet he is not that good in real life !!! fantastic old ross , obviously you are the guy who made up his price tag ,fantastic , yes they have a real nack of making terrible players look good for the tv , i cannot wait to get to work tomorrow to tell the guys . they should prescribe your comments as an anti depressant.

  • MikeyBhoy says:

We’ll take Van Persie in a swap deal since he’s looking to actually win a trophy in his playing career.

Arsenal will have their usual struggle to compete with the city’s, united and chelski’s again this season. 4th is about as far as they’ll get if they are lucky

  • Ochiewo V. says:

Looks good on tv but not in real life! Utter contradiction, nonsence ! Dont be too hard on the lad. Isn’t tv not a reflection of real life. Expensive does not necessarily mean good. Wasn’t Ashavin expensive? How expensive were Song, Rvp? Grow up mate.

  • Steven says:

    Old ross co is a f*cking pr!ck
