The levels of buzz concerning Celtic youngster Victor Wanyama continue to grow. As does his list of suitors. The Kenyan has a attracted a list of interested clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal, QPR and Stoke.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who only provide the bare minimum in terms of detail. It’s not clear how much truth there is to this story, but he is believed to have grown increasingly concerned with where he’s deployed at Celtic. He views himself as a defensive midfielder, but Neil Lennon has often deployed him as a defender.

You wonder also, whether the forthcoming lack of competition in the Scottish Premier League will tempt players to join other Leagues. Talent like Wanyama are likely to be the first ones out.

My question is as follows. Should Arsenal be interested in the 21-year-old, or do they have bigger fish to fry in the transfer market?

The Mail value him at £7m and that’s just the kind of price-tag that you can imagine Arsene Wenger swooning over. Whether he has the talent to make it at a club like Arsenal is another matter entirely.

Arsenal’s midfield is fairly packed out as things stand. Even discounting injured stars Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky (I should probably include Abou Diaby on that list too, right?) there’s still Alex Song, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin, Emmanuel Frimpong and others to fill the void.

The depth in this area of the squad saw Wenger turn down the opportunity to sign Yann M’Vila from Rennes, so it doesn’t make much sense that he should then seek to sign an inferior player (sorry Celtic fans!)

He’s definitely got potential. He may go on to be a world-beater. But as things stand Wanyama doesn’t have enough experience to be counted on to perform week-in and week-out. Alex Song, on the other hand, has come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons. He’s a rugged footballer who’s unafraid to put his foot in, but he’s also capable of getting creative and joining Arsenal’s attack.

In short, he’s exactly the kind of player that Arsene Wenger likes. And I’m not sure that Wanyama is. So perhaps the Gunners should leave this one to Stoke and QPR?
