Liverpool the ‘favourites’ to sign this star, but is he the right man for the job?

After Liverpool’s dire showing last Saturday against West Brom, one thing’s clear: the Reds can no longer put up with the abysmal performances put in by players with little chance of any future at the club. Players like Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam were all, at some level, responsible for the club’s meager showing last season and continuing to rely on them could cost the club big. Whilst Jordan Henderson can excuse himself on account of his age, the other two have a long way to go to save their future at the club.

All of which pre-amble leads onto this rather obvious statement: Liverpool need to sign more players. I’m sure Fabio Borini, Joe Allen and Oussama Assaidi, will have an impact this season, I’m just not sure that it will be enough.

Which brings me to The Independent’s claims that Liverpool are the ‘favourites’ to sign Manchester City winger Adam Johnson. They’re up there with Tottenham and Sunderland, duking it out for his signature. I can’t help but get a little excited about the prospect of Johnson making a move to Anfield.

Despite his obvious ability, he’s largely been Manchester City’s forgotten man over the last couple of seasons. Last term he made just ten appearances, which is a shame for all the fans who had to miss out on his excellent close control, quick feet and dynamic forward play. Anybody who saw him play against Italy in the recent England friendly will attest: this kid’s got talent to burn.

Although, that’s perhaps a little inaccurate. At 25-years-old, he’s no longer a kid and must be itching for first team football. He’s spoken before about his dissatisfaction: “I’m the kind of player that needs to be playing regularly. Any player does, really, no matter what age they are. I need to play week-in week-out. You can’t just go into one game after not having played for five, and be expected to perform. It would be nice to get a run of games with England but I’m not sure if I’ll get that chance at City.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has spoken of his willingness to let Johnson go if necessary: “Adam can have a future here but you should also understand when you are 23 or 24 years old, you want to play, if you are at a top team, you can’t always do that, so I agree, if he wants to, he has to leave – but if that happens I will be so sorry because Adam is a good guy.”

Things seem to be progressing nicely. He’s a quality player, who deserves a shot at the top level, unlike the likes of Stewart Downing.

What’s your take? Would you like Brendan Rodgers to push this deal through?

i think adam johnson would be a good singing playing on the left and hopefully getting someone like walcott on the right with the other players we got along with hopefully dempsey and sahin and the addition of another striker for example maybe sturridge or torres even tho latter is nearly impossible.ba maybe would also be good.just my opinion.
