Is this REALLY the right tact for Liverpool to be taking in the transfer market?

I can’t have been the only fan to be a little disappointed by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodger’s recent quotes in The Mirror. I don’t claim any expertise in the managerial landscape, but, for what it’s worth, the quotes don’t seem to paint a picture of the Reds moving in the right direction. When asked about Liverpool’s progress in the transfer market, he responded:

“There is nothing imminent, and it may take one or two moves [elsewhere] to spark everything off. I want players in sooner rather than later – it is important to get the group together as quickly as possible.”

“I have also looked at one or two loan deals from abroad. There are some quality players in that market that I have enquired about.”

It’s the second bit that may well concern fans. After Liverpool’s dismal showing last season (Carling Cup victory aside, and even then – who cares?) it’s clear they need an excellent summer if they’re to progress next time round. The players currently on the book, just aren’t a good enough unit to compete for a place in the top four.

If that’s Liverpool’s aim next season, they need to show some serious ambition in the transfer market. I don’t mean that they need to splash the cash. There are players out there who could improve Liverpool without costing a fortune. Check out this £4.7m wonder, for instance.

What would be the point of bringing in a player for a season and then sending him packing? If he improves the squad, shouldn’t Liverpool be looking to snap him up on a permanent basis?

Besides – it’s hard to find quality players to bring in on loan. Whilst rumours abound regarding Nuri Sahin’s future and a potential loan move to Arsenal, these kind of stories are something of a rarity.

There’s a reason big clubs don’t tend to go in for loan moves (with some notable exceptions). If players succeed during their loan moves, their price-tag inflates massively.

The fact of the matter is this. Liverpool aren’t looking for temporary success. They’re looking to build a solid platform from which they can start winning proper silverware again. What’s the point of building this platform with transitory pieces? For a forward thinking club, this just wouldn’t make sense.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be looking to strike some loan deals?

Still cleaning up after the Dalglish mess

  • Redsim says:

The only loan moves worth considering are those including an option to buy after a year for a pre-agreed fee – that would allow us to assess the player’s usefulness before purchasing and reduces the chance of a disastrous mistake.

FACT : Liverpool “NO LONGER” able to attract so called World Class Players.
The earlier we accept this the better.

We are just a 2nd grade team at the moment. No disrespect to Aston Villa, the only thing that is keeping Liverpool mentioned under the same breath as Aston Villa is our history. The past few seasons, we have been nothing but medicore. Absolutely 2nd rate, when it comes to the league.

So unless we can improve dramatically under BR, we can only attract players from mid table teams or the lower leagues. Be glad that we still got Gerrad, Pepe Reina, Agger and Suarez.

Liverpool, we are the next Swansea!!!!

Agree with your comment. We now have a manager who only thinks of bringing players from Swansea; we might as well change the name of LFC to Swansea.

Think if we have RB back there should be world star willing to joint don’t get me wrong,BR is a good coach but status wise he’s not there yet and i don’t think famous player are willing to take the risk playing for him.

We are supposed to be liverpool reading through recent press releases by brenden i cant believe how low we have sunk, call me paranoid but i cant help comparing recent events with the dreaded hicks and gillete era.Liverpool made 300mil+ whilst in usa but still are trying to sell are most valuable assets ie\agger and carrol and replace them with cheaper replacements if BR cant attract top players to our club maybe hes the wrong man for the job and if you want to be in the top four bring in some attacking coaches as that is were they have struggled since Rafa sacked his coaches this would save lfc face and money as it would mean not losing money on andy carrol.Come on Werner get a grip of our great club before mr rodgers turns us into Swansea2

Rodgers tactics with transfers is not always a waste! Perhaps they fill a role that will be filled by somebody we are willing to pay more money for later. The loan then is for a year for us to have more money available for the player we want to buy. There are more than one reason to make a loan deal!

  • bazza says:

Have you ever thought that a loan player would give the current young players a chance to improve? The loan player could fill an immediate need and then go back to his club giving our good crop of youngsters more chance to mature their skills.

  • Daniel says:

this is not thought out at all, any loan deal that is made is most likely going to have a pre-agreed price to make the move permanent so there will be no inflation and it allows us to bring someone in and not panic if it doesnt work out, just send them home, im all for the loan idea it will work out a lot better

  • Gazza says:

I think astute loan deals are worth thinking about. Were Spurs weaker because they had loaned adebeyor last term? Would we object to getting someone like Kaka in from Real Madrid (if it were to happen). Loan deals can work as they can give a short term impetus and if it works out we can buy a player we know works for us, as opposed to taking an Aquilani type gamble. Prudence, dear prudence.

  • col says:

its not just loan deals we need to replace players who have left and keep the squad we already have.our main problem last year was it is was transitional period for all players with last years comings and going we cant afford to make this mistake again we could also bring in a couple of decent coaches who could teach the players where the back of the net is and how to land a cross. COME ON BRENDAN give us fans something EXCITING to read about instead of filling us with dread everytime we see an article associated with our beloved club

  • redhed17 says:

We don’t know the finances at the club, but looking at the Europa Cup game, it may still be ‘pre-season’, but we need some quality, and if we can’t afford it, we’ll have to loan it.

As long as he gets a winning combination, or at least players to make a team that look like they are improving, I don’t care if they are all on loan.

  • col says:

Liverpool made 300mil+ in sponsorship deals whilst in USA this info is on most lfc news websites. if we cant attract top players we will need to splash some cash as other clubs do ie\spurs,Sigurdsson otherwise we cant compete we are not Swansea we are LIVERPOOL and we need to be competing at the top before our 2 talisman retire otherwise we will be trapped in the mire for another 20 years

  • edward z says:

its true that br is bringing in his philosophy into lfc…its the same philosophy that he implanted in swansea. lfc is transforming into a small club like swansea. which big club ever go into the loan market ?! we wont be competing for top for this year but our real competition will be with swansea as we try to beat them into finishing the season by breaking into the top 10!

  • Rock says:

The fact of the matter is, Liverpool are a mid table club at the moment, we dont have the money nor the ‘pull’ to get decent players and compete with the likes of Chelsea or City. Rodgers appears to be looking at players that are in mid table teams, Fulham, Swansea?? Are these the teams we should be buying players from? Mid table players have mid table mentality! No one else would want to play for us! Tough times ahead for LFC unfortunately, and it’s still not certain that Rodgers is the man to turn it round for us, hope of course he is!

  • JJ says:

Vargas for 4.7m? Not possible! Anyway it could be loan with a buy out fee. If BR find that the squad still need more signings, but funds were limited, I don’t see why loans don’t make sense as long as it improve the squad

  • Winnie3030 says:

I’m not against loans but it does worry me that we’re heading in this direction because we have only landed one target so far. I just hope Rodgers is not using the loan market as a last ditch effort to get quality players needed in keys positions like wingers and forwards.

  • sitt says:

I think Rodgers should sell Agger and Wilson, and replace with Papadopoulos from Schalke and Gouweelew from Hereenven, sell Joe Cole, Adam, Henderson, Spearing, Pacheco and Bellamy, and bring Strootmand from PSV, Maher from Alkmaar, Susaeta from Bilbao, Sinclair from Swansea, and Jovetic from Fiorentina.

    • Fraser says:

With that list and knowing the painfully long time LFC takes to even begin moving on transfers it would take about 9 years to complete!!

  • Fraser says:

Rodgers is simply following owner’s instructions – Don’t spend any more than you get from sales! – end of….

  • col says:

have you been playing football manager then as they are scouts most highly rated wihin game for lfc

  • Dan the fan says:

What about Adebayor? Successfully loaned to a top-four side last season. I don’t see why people are getting their knickers in a twist about this.

  • RoGue says:

The only players we’re linked to who are actually capable of helping LFC back to top four are Dempsey and Ramirez. Even so, Dempsey is too old and not worth the money they’re asking for. Honestly, we need players like Iker Muniain and Javi Martinez. BR would probably have to break the bank for them but they’d be worth it. Even if we get Muniain it’d be good enough.

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas MUNIAIN
    DEMPSEY Suarez RAMIREZ

Subs : BUTLAND, Coates, Carragher, Henderson, Downing, Shelvey, BORINI

And if the reports about Agger wanting to leave then let him but get 20M for him so it would leave BR with some funds to work on getting Javi Martinez as his replacement.
P.S. only get Dempsey for 5-6M or give them Adam and we get Dempsey in return.
