A £4.7m transfer bargain for Liverpool to snap up?

Will Stewart Downing’s goal in the first leg of Liverpool’s Europa League adventure spark a critical reappraisal or just provide the jumping board for another spree of jokes at his expense? Judging by the reaction on Twitter, I’d say that it’s the latter. Despite spending big on Downing last summer, it’s widely accepted that he’s not the answer at Anfield. Whilst he produces in flashes, it’s fair to say that he hasn’t really performed at an acceptable level.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds were looking at a few other wingers and seeking to provide a little more competition in this area – especially since Dirk Kuyt also moved on this summer. I doubt, however, that they’d want to splash the cash, given their proclivities last summer. Making cost-effective signings is the order of the day.

But that shouldn’t mean skimping on quality. Which brings me to TalkSPORT’s claims that Fiorentina have put Liverpool target Juan Manuel Vargas up for sale. The Peruvian international is currently training on his own, whilst the rest of his squad-mates are working hard at a pre-season camp in Moena.

It’s also claimed that he’d cost Liverpool between £3.9m and £4.7m, not a bad sum for a footballer of his quality and ability. He was worth £12m back in 2008 and managed to attract the interest of Real Madrid.

He’s predominantly a full-back but he’s versatile enough to be deployed down the wings. Given that Liverpool are fairly strong at the back, but weak going forward, I’m guessing that’s why the Reds are interested (presuming the rumours are true). Indeed, he’s often struggled when deployed in the left-back position for Fiorentina. But when granted a more attacking role, he’s excelled.

He’s got pace and confidence on the ball, loves to drive forward and can deliver a mean cross. With that in mind, perhaps Liverpool shouldn’t get rid of Carroll after all? He’s also something of a set-piece specialist. He’s a good player and it sounds like he’s available at a bargain price. He fits the Reds current transfer modus operandi and could end up being a real asset for the squad.

He may not be a marquee signing, but he has the quality to add something to this side.

What’s your take? Would Juan Manuel Vargas be a good addition at Anfield?

To old now especially if we buy Dempsey 29 in October. Pity we didn’t buy Matías Fernández from Sporting who has been brought to replace Vargas and is nearly 3 years younger!

For Christ sake, u r still talking about Caroll, we don’t need Caroll, what we need is a creative winger, a striker and Alan.

Why do you think Allen is so essential to liverpools progress to a top 4 spot . Allen Allen oooh ! so amazing. I bet if rogers didn’t become our new manager and say Martinez was instead who would be saying we really need that Allen from Swansea ? Not many . The chances are we would of been going for Wigan players instead of course. That’s how sad it is . Allen didn’t look anything special yesterday from what I saw ? He got a very high pass success rate last season , great but thought he’s supposed to be a playmaker? Don’t playmakers crest goals ? Allen got 2 assists last season. Not a great stat for a creative mid if you ask me. You can use stats to make a player sound good or bad.he got 91 % pass success last season . How come the top 4 are not going for him ? Surely barca should be chasing him since they love that type of player? I think rogers wants his whole Swansea team from last season And wants to play same style as last season. He said he don’t play for draws so prepare to have heavy defeats at times just like Swansea did last season. Liverpool had there worst prem season ever and Swansea had there best season ever and we still finished above them. I some how feel that if rogers stayed at Swansea I very much doubt he would of bettered or even equalled last season. Just feel some fans out there are getting a little carried away with rogers amazing Tika taka football that he secretly learnt from barca lol. We scraped a 1-0 win against a League 2/ blue sqaure prem standard team.I know a win is a win but that should give us some idea of where our teams at and I can tell you now it’s nowhere near top 4 standard and bringing in players like Borrini/ Allen in my opinion ain’t goner be the answer . Hope you prove me wrong rogers really hope you do .

Muniain would be a better buy. He’ll cost 4 times the amount but at 19 and with the skills he already has, I think he’ll develop into a much more accomplished player in the coming years.

  • Surprises, time is not on our side!

  • Turner says:

@dhh: I totally agree that there will be transfer surprises for Liverpool before the window closes. However, the players who will eventually be signed will appall rather than excite the fans. It’s not true that YNWA. One can always walk alone. What is factual though is you can never f**k alone. YNFA.

Just what we need, a fat 29 year old, who gets Boo’d by his own fans, for lack of effort, and berated by his teammates, hence training alone. Thats why they want rid of him for such a low fee, he is USELESS.

  • if Rodgers make a mistake to allowed Daniel Agger leave, then he (Rodgers)should then prepare for his failure ,and i will advice him (Rodgers)to keep Andy Carroll around because i can Andy getting back to his best.
