Arsenal offered £6.3m midfield general: but should they take him?

|

So Arsenal have once again managed to sell off their two best players this summer. I’m sure some fans will dispute that claim, but Robin Van Persie was the Gunner’s top goalscorer and Alex Song was the club’s best assister last season. Only Theo Walcott comes close to competing statistically (and there’s a chance that he could be off too!) Whilst Arsene Wenger has already brought in a couple of strikers and a talented midfielder, it’s clear that more work needs to be done in the transfer market if the Gunners are going to challenge for the title this season.

With the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all boasting strong squads, it looks like Arsene Wenger has his work cut out. So who should the Gunners be looking to?

According to The Metro, Anderlecht star Lucas Biglia is desperate to leave Anderlecht this summer in order to join one of Europe’s top leagues. He’s seeking an opportunity to win his place back in his national side (Argentina) and may well struggle to do so in the Belgian football league.

His tough-tackling, explosive showings as a defensive midfielder for Anderlecht have seen him attract the interest of the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and PSG.

The Metro claims that his agents have been circulating his CV around clubs (that’s not very respectful to Anderlecht now, is it?) and have offered him to Arsenal, who were impressed by what they’ve been shown. It’s also claimed that he’s available for just £6.3m, which is pretty reasonable considering he’s in with a shot for being an important part of Argentina’s international set-up.

It’s often suggested that Arsenal lack fight, or that they’re too often bullied. Well, the more players that can get that will help defy this reputation, the better. Biglia certainly has the heft, physicality and tenacity to add a little competitive edge to Arsenal’s midfield.

Once Jack Wilshere returns from injury, I’m not sure that Biglia would continue to be a first team player, but I think he’d be a vital squad player. It may not be a marquee signing, but it could be a sensible one. He’s got a Wenger-baiting price tag, plenty of pedigree and a big future ahead of him. So maybe it’s time for the Gunners to snap him up?

What’s your take? Would Biglia be a good addition at the Emirates?

On a nutshell…..Yes. I’d rather Etienne Capoue the French Pat Viera, but Lucas Biglia along with Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla would be a formidable trio. We would definitely always dominate possession with that trio, but we would need another striker, to give ourselves a chance to win the Premiership with that structure.

Biglia is a good player but mostly a backup player then a major for any top club. if arsenal would buy him he should be bought as a backup to others because the epl is very strainous.

Boring. Surely there’s a cusp player ready after 16 years of Wenger’s regime? What about Lansbury or Yennaris. Are they ever going to get a run? Wilshire’s meant to be back in 2 months so what is the point?

Wenger should sign fellaini and m’vila

  • COYG says:

Etienne Capoue and Viera are both French mate

  • Steve Burgess says:

Correction- Vieira was Senegalese .. However like many moved to France at a young teen and subsequently represented France at International level.

  • AndreAFC says:

Alex Song isn’t a big loss. Yes, he did give the most assists last season, but we don’t need his assists anymore – they have Cazorla to do that now. It seems people forget that Song is defensive midfielder, and in that he was never really great – you know, the ‘defending’ part. If Arsenal bring in a true DM, one who will sitback and just protect the back four, it will be a more balanced side.

whenever a french midfielder is linked to arsenal everyone’s calls him the new Patrick veiria. he is not. biliga is a sensible buy considered his quality and price and it wud increase our squad quality.

  • lawrence says:

what arsenal need is a strong and matured defensive midfielder and he cant fit into that role

  • Phil -that -hole says:

We can keep on adding to the quality of the squad for ever and getting nowhere. What we need right now is an aggressive and fearsome ball winner who can help launch a counter attack as an option to our high possession/slow build up game that allows the opposition to get behind the ball and block our chances (ie Sunderland).I would have thought Podolski and Giroud would be ideal for the counter attack as they can run at goal and finish, cross or hold up the ball for the lay off.
