Are Manchester United right to chase this Olympic Gold Medallist?

|

I think it’s fair to say that Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to sit on his laurels since surrendering the Premier League to Manchester City. Whilst a Monday night loss to Everton is hardly the most auspicious start, the smart signings that Fergie has made during throughout the transfer window are putting the club in a great position to reclaim their throne. Players like Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa look set to have a big influence on United’s season, but I’m sure that fans continue to wonder whether the club will make any more signings before the window slams shut.

Which brings me to The Daily Mail’s claim that Manchester United are weighing up a move for Olympic Gold Medallist Hector Herrera. The 22-year-old Mexican midfielder helped to guide his side to a victory over Brazil in the Olympic final and picked up plenty of laudatory reviews along the way. It’s his displays in this tournament that have piqued the interest of clubs like United and Liverpool. Pachuca’s sporting director Andres Fassi has announced that the Red Devils have requested permission to approach the youngster:

There is an official interest. We have the document, but there’s nothing else to add at this time.

The player has two nicknames: el zorrillo (‘skunk’) and zorro (‘fox). I wonder which one he prefers. One thing’s for sure – he’s a genuine talent. He’s a dynamic midfielder, who loves to bomb forward and support the attack. He’s confident on the ball, loves to take defenders on, commit men and use his pace to trouble the opposition. From the little we’ve seen of him (can anybody really claim to know how good he is? How many people watch Mexican League football regularly?) he looks to have a big future ahead of him.

Of course, there may be some worry that he’s yet to prove himself in a major league. His CV reads: Cuautla, Tampico Madero and Pachuca – all Mexican League sides. There’s every chance that he would struggle to make the transition to football at the top level. Whilst he impressed against U-23 sides, it could well be different when squaring off against the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

The young Mexican has a lot of potential, but given Manchester United’s spending already this summer, it may make sense for Fergie to look to more proven talent if he’s seeking to make further additions.

What’s your take? Would you take Zorro at Old Trafford?
