Is this REALLY the right tact for Liverpool to be taking in the transfer market?

I can’t have been the only fan to be a little disappointed by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodger’s recent quotes in The Mirror. I don’t claim any expertise in the managerial landscape, but, for what it’s worth, the quotes don’t seem to paint a picture of the Reds moving in the right direction. When asked about Liverpool’s progress in the transfer market, he responded:

“There is nothing imminent, and it may take one or two moves [elsewhere] to spark everything off. I want players in sooner rather than later – it is important to get the group together as quickly as possible.”

“I have also looked at one or two loan deals from abroad. There are some quality players in that market that I have enquired about.”

It’s the second bit that may well concern fans. After Liverpool’s dismal showing last season (Carling Cup victory aside, and even then – who cares?) it’s clear they need an excellent summer if they’re to progress next time round. The players currently on the book, just aren’t a good enough unit to compete for a place in the top four.

If that’s Liverpool’s aim next season, they need to show some serious ambition in the transfer market. I don’t mean that they need to splash the cash. There are players out there who could improve Liverpool without costing a fortune. Check out this £4.7m wonder, for instance.

What would be the point of bringing in a player for a season and then sending him packing? If he improves the squad, shouldn’t Liverpool be looking to snap him up on a permanent basis?

Besides – it’s hard to find quality players to bring in on loan. Whilst rumours abound regarding Nuri Sahin’s future and a potential loan move to Arsenal, these kind of stories are something of a rarity.

There’s a reason big clubs don’t tend to go in for loan moves (with some notable exceptions). If players succeed during their loan moves, their price-tag inflates massively.

The fact of the matter is this. Liverpool aren’t looking for temporary success. They’re looking to build a solid platform from which they can start winning proper silverware again. What’s the point of building this platform with transitory pieces? For a forward thinking club, this just wouldn’t make sense.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool be looking to strike some loan deals?

Surely you meant Tack, not Tact. to tack means to change direction, whereas tact is a keen sense of what is appropriate, tasteful, or aesthetically pleasing; something Old Red Nose doesn’t have.

I’m a true lfc fan, i saw alot of speculations about liverpool fc who is IN and OUT. As a fan we expect alot from BR but,,,,,,,???the only thing that i want to say is why he is keen on the PL players especially on swansea? Why don’t we look other top players from abroad? Unless we have to use (gave them atime) to our youngesters like rahim, pacheco,,,, to install our club. otherwise new season is coming soon and the transfer dead date is not far,,,, so,,,,,YWNA ”liver 4ever”

Jesus, you people drive me crazy! Let’s start with the author of the little piece –

“Check out this £4.7m wonder” – If he’s dropped in price that much, then that usually means that player has declined as a footballer. If he’s still a great footballer, then other (better) clubs will be in for him and we will have no chance of signing him. Or that £4.7m price tag could be a big lie because I checked a few reputable papers that have linked us with him and not one mentions a price.

“What would be the point of bringing in a player for a season and then sending him packing? If he improves the squad, shouldn’t Liverpool be looking to snap him up on a permanent basis?”

Erm, perhaps because we can’t afford to do that? Or we’d have to sell some of our best players to do that? Or we can’t get the targets we are after this season because their clubs are playing hardball? or all of the above?

Now, I totally agree with the theory that a club’s long-term future is very important and that young players with potential should be signed.

What I really hate is how people, professionals included, dismiss buying (or loaning) established players now to secure our short-term future. People seem repulsed by the very idea of it. Use it as a stick to beat people with while claiming the person who suggests it isn’t thinking about the long-term future of the club. That the club will be on it’s knees if we get some top players in now.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Long-term or short-term, you can’t look after both apparently.

Well, here’s a little secret for you, the short-term future comes before the long-term future (shocking, I know). Without a short-term future, you won’t have a long-term future. Surely this makes the short-term future the imperative issue? If we don’t get players good enough already, we won’t finish 4th again and could finish lower than 8th. If this happens, the list of good players willing to join us will dwindle. Without that Champions League money, we will fall further and further behind. We will be forced to sell players who are on high wages. Our long-term future will be f**ked, basically.

I remember Rafa wanting to secure our long-time future by buying potentials. This was after buying player like Alonso, Garcia and Mascherano. You know, when we were regularly finishing in the top 4. Now we are lucky if we can qualify the the Europa Cup. Nice long-term future!

With the right loan players, we could get back into the top 4. Have you seen who we’ve been linked with in the loan market? Sahin and Kaka are two of the names mentioned. Nevermind if they are only with us for a year, they could easily get us back in the CL, then we would be able to attract the kind of players the clubs needs. Besides, how do you know the loan deals won’t come with an option to buy? That would be a safer option – instead of spending £19m on someone like aquilani, who ended up a failure at the club (for whatever reason) after and was sold on the cheap. If a loan player (with an option to buy) impresses during his spell, great, we can buy him. If he’s gash, great, we don’t buy him.

“There’s a reason big clubs don’t tend to go in for loan moves (with some notable exceptions).”

Well, I can think of quite a few, but I’m in a rush here, so I’ll just mention Adebayor, you know, that player that got Spurs into the top 4, therefore making them more appealing than Liverpool to most players.

You say we’ve been linked with Sahin but this is a rarity. So, are you saying we shouldn’t sign him? If that’s the case, that’s the most foolish thing I’ve heard since hearing Poulsen was a great DM.

    That’s it, I’ve had enough!

  • Matu says:

I forgot to mention – Some of you are playing to much Football Manager, looking at some of the name you want us to sign. Jesus Wept!
