Why Liverpool should sell Aquilani to finance THIS forward-thinking transfer:

It’s a real shame that Alberto Aquilani hasn’t worked out at Liverpool. During his time in England the Italian playmaker has looked more like a homesick puppy than a footballer. Despite his talents (and he is indeed a player of some quality, worthy, I’d say of his £20m price-tag) it’s clear he hasn’t wanted to stick around at Anfield. As a result loan moves back to Serie A have seen him play for Juventus and Milan, when he really ought to have been helping to dig Liverpool out of their slumber.

Brendan Rodgers has noted before that he would grant his players ‘clean slates’, but according to The People, he’s given up hope and is now looking to send Alberto back to Serie A – this time on a permanent basis. They claim that the Reds are looking to offload the 28-year-old to Fiorentina for just £7m. That’d represent a loss of £13m (I should point out however, it’s not clear how much of Aquilani’s £20m fee was actually paid by the club, as much of it was based on add-ons).

This raises the question: Are Liverpool right to send him packing, or ought they to have attempted to get him purring again?

My feeling is as follows: Aquilani has never really displayed any great willingness at the prospect of playing for Liverpool. For all his talents, he’s got no interest in testing himself in the Premier League. So if the player himself doesn’t want to be a Red, then the club should look to move him on. They may well take a financial hit, but it sends out a bigger message: ‘We only want players who want to be here’.

Liverpool’s a fantastic club and there are plenty of class footballers who’d love to play for them. These are the types that ought to be given a real shot.

Which brings me to Joe Allen. Rodgers is known to be keen on the mercurial Welshman and selling Aquilani could finance this move. The Swans value him at £15m, but The People say that Rodgers is looking to land the midfield ace for just £9m. If he can pull off a move for that price, I’d be very impressed.

We’ve all seen Allen’s stats from last season. He doesn’t seem to put a foot wrong and may well be just the player that Liverpool need to get the creative juices flowing once more. He’s better than Adam and more keen than Aquilani. As such, it’d be a sensible addition to the squad.

What’s your take? Would selling Aquilani and bringing in Allen be a good move for Liverpool?

£9 million to sign Allen, probabley is about right value of him, but there’s no chance swansea will sell him to liverpool for that. As liverpool are interested they will double his value

I think aquilani should stay this season and prove himself as a class footballer. Rodgers only want players he has worked with before. Keeping aquilani and look away from Allen is a good option. Mertens, Ramirez, Affelay and Jovetic is players we should be looking on. We NEED players in that position, we HAVE midfielders.

We have midfielders, but we don’t have quality midfielders. We don’t have midfielders who can tackle (Adam). We don’t have composure on the ball required to fulfill possession football ( spearing/Adam/downing). We don’t have midfielders who are skilful enough to keep possession good enough, nor weave paths through the opposition (spearing/Adam/downing/cole). These players have no end product. Lfc need a certain type of player to make the system work and we certainly don’t have them yet. Aqualani has never wanted to play for us. Always on loan. He can decide to stay, but chose to go on loan when the option came up. Shame we can’t offload spearing/Adam/downing/cole/Bellamy say for £22m and use it towards buying 3 or 4 above average midfielders, like giovani did santos (always does the business for Mexico), Christian Eriksen of Ajax, Willian- shaktar, jovetic- fiorentina, Ramirez-bologna, gaitan- benfica, ander Herrera, muniain- athletic Bilbao.

Yeah, lets buy the whole swansea team for mr rodgers, this is absurd!! Why can’t a manager of liverpool attract creative players who can change things at lfc, why does he need only players whom he has worked with before!! Did mancini worked with tevez, aguero, toure, dzeko, baloteli etcc.. before he won something with city?? Did wenger worked with giroud, van persie etc before coming to arsenal? did ferguson worked with kagawa when he was a kid? A good manager should be able to spot good talented players worldwide, not from midtable teams!! Acquilani is far better than Allen, Adam and henderson, but just coz he is not brit or physical, he’s been labelled a misfit, just wonder if alonso was not given time to prove his worth by rafa, these same persons who did not knew him wud had been labelling him a misfit!!

  • chinonso says:
