Inter Milan refuse to rule out his sale: Time for Manchester United to get involved?

|

Just when you think a transfer rumour is dead, it so often springs back into life. Like Lazarus himself, or a bad horror movie villain, the Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United transfer talk just won’t die. It’s been going on for two summers now and the talk doesn’t seem to be dying down. Until Sir Alex Ferguson makes that big money midfield signing that most fans are crying out for, the Papers will continue to link Sneijder with a move to Old Trafford.

Every comment from Inter Milan’s staff and the player himself seems to be analysed to within an inch of its life. This recent quote from Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni, however, hides nothing:

“Sneijder is fundamental from a technical and tactical point of view, but I can’t say that he is not for sale. That would be an abuse of my power. I would only ask the president to think carefully should an important offer arrive.” (Via: ESPN)

In essence: Sneijder is key to Stramaccioni’s Inter Milan plans. In reality: should a big money bid be put in, the club are willing to consider it. No doubt Inter Milan personnel are sick and tired of having one of their key players linked to another major European football powerhouse. Isn’t that part of the reason why Arsenal sold Cesc Fabregas last summer?

According to The Metro, Manchester United are now on alert, and may re-ignite their interest in the Dutchman.

Manchester United have already signed Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmind and Nick Powell (one for the future) from Crewe. Whilst there’s still work to be done to fill the gap that Paul Scholes will eventually leave, is Sniejder the right man for the job?

We all know his attributes. He’s got outrageous passing ability. He’s got effortless Dutch technique. He’s capable of moments of magic. He’s a winner. In short: he’s a special player.

And accordingly, he comes with an incredible price-tag. Inter Milan may be prepared to sell, but they won’t be willing to let Wesley go on the cheap. He’s much too important to them. Manchester United would have to fork out a fortune to pry him from their grasp and let’s not forget that he’s now 28-years-old.

As Manchester United attempt to compete with their cross-town rivals, the time may be right to invest in youth, or in players who offer real value for money. Kagawa was a sensible signing. Sneijder, for all his worth, might not be. My personal hope is that Fergie can unearth another gem and stay clear of the big money signings.

What’s your take? Is it time for Manchester United to gamble on Sniejder?
