Does this £25m man have what it takes to replace Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie?

Just when Arsenal fans thought they were having a successful summer, their captain, talisman and top goal scorer Robin Van Persie had to go and pull the rug out from underneath them. Signing Lukas Podolski from FC Koln and Olivier Giroud from Montpellier put the Gunners in a strong position. RVP’s statement claiming that he wouldn’t be renewing his contract shattered this resolve and has essentially placed Arsene Wenger’s side back at square one.

Many Arsenal fans feel that Giroud and Podolski will be able to cover the goal-scoring slack should Van Persie be sold this summer. But wasn’t the purpose of making these signings to improve the squad? If the Gunner’s are to keep growing in the wake of Van Persie’s absence, you can’t help but feel that they’ll need to make another signing in this area.

According to The Express, Wenger has lined up Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic as his number one transfer target. He’ll face competition from the likes of Chelsea and numerous other European suitors. They also slap a £25m price-tag on the Montenegrin.

There’s no doubting Jovetic’s prowess. At just 22-years-old he lit the Serie A up last season netting 14 goals in 27 appearances. But the curly-haired maestro offers much more than goals. He’s a direct dribbler who isn’t afraid to take defenders on, commit players and use his technical ability, close control and silky feet to work an opening. Pundits have compared him to Roberto Baggio, but my limited worldview can’t help but draw a comparison to a more effective Gervinho.

The difference being: one scores goals and one doesn’t. It’s fair to say that Jovetic has earned his £25m price-tag. Best of all: he’s only going to get better. Now is definitely the right time to buy. If Arsenal get a decent payout from selling Robin Van Persie (providing, that is, they do decide to sell) they could do a lot worse than invest in this talented young thing.

But it’s worth remembering that Arsene Wenger is remarkably tight-fisted when it comes to the transfer market. Will he be willing to smash Arsenal’s transfer record in order to secure Jovetic? I’m not so sure. He’s an exciting player, with a barrage of suitors, but you can’t help but feel that Wenger is more likely to snap up an unknown youngster for a paltry sum than sign somebody with as much buzz as Jovetic.

But that won’t stop me from getting excited at the mere possibility.

What’s your take? Would Jovetic be a good signing for Arsenal? Could he make up for Robin Van Persie’s absence?

Lots of us were presing for Wenger to buy Jovetic last season. What is great about him is that he is a ‘self starter’. He doesn’t rely on other players if things don’t go well and is ALWAYS trying things. A ‘leading’ player. Real Arsenal player. High tempo player. If we also bought Etienne Capoue, another high tempo player our game could start to match the speed of the ‘invincibles’. He would be a big buy. As good as Eden Hazard.

  • Yes, Jovetic is a pretty good striker

i think he would be a great addition with van persie still in the team if rip goes we gonna need giroud to really go for it next season but i still don’t understand why no one don’t like bendtner we need a world class playmaker that was the problem last season we relied on the wingers too much and our counter attack last season was terrible thats what were famous for

  • Mike says:

Why not go 4 David villam, which i think is the better option.

jovetic would be a good signing for arsenal, but rvp should stay as well. just one more attacker and we’ll experience a great season.
