What’s the story behind Chelsea’s strange obsession with this transfer target?

According to the London Evening Standard, Chelsea have made a new bid for Wigan forward Victor Moses. The Blues originally launched a £4m effort earlier this summer before the Latics told them where to stick it. Now Chelsea have come back with improved terms.

The Standard claim that their bid ‘could be worth up to £9m’. Breaking it down, that’s £6m upfront and another £3m in performance-related bonuses. If the £4m bid was considered miserly by the Wigan, hierarchy, they may find the Blue’s most recent bid much closer to their ballpark.

What’s strange to me, however, is the fact that Chelsea have dedicated so much time and resource to chasing this player down and tempting his club to sell. He’s a quality player, but the Blues have the cash to go for better, more proven talent.

Chelsea sign players like Eden Hazard – world football’s most exciting (and yes, costly) youngsters, who would make an immediate impact on the side. Whilst Chelsea need forwards to provide Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge with some competition, it’s hard to see where Moses would fit in. It’s not like he’s any better than either of those two individuals (despite the general feeling that surrounds Torres).

Perhaps I’m being a snob here. I understand that players are capable of making the leap from a bottom of the table Premier League side to a side competing for the title. It happened with former Wigan player Antonio Valencia. Since leaving the Latics he’s had rock-fuel pumped into his career. He’s ticked up ample silverware and is now regarded as one of the best wingers in the Premier League. But Chelsea are a completely different club to Manchester United and are run in an entirely different way.

There’s no guarantee that Chelsea would be able to give him enough chances to prove himself. I’d be worried that Moses would be left by the wayside. And quite frankly, the player deserves better.

Liverpool are also thought to be interested. To me that makes a lot more sense. The Reds need to make effective low-cost signings to offset their poor performance during last season’s transfer window. Moses wouldn’t break the bank and could well develop into something special. So let’s hope that the Blues stay clear of this one.

What’s your take? Would Moses be a good addition at Stamford Bridge?

He is home-grown in England and u-21 still this year. That is the answer to your title. You’re welcome.

PS Valencia wasn’t regarded as one of the best wingers in the Premier League when Man U and Real Madrid were fighting over him? News to me…

PPS “But Chelsea are a completely different club to Manchester United and are run in an entirely different way.” Yes… a much smarter way where money is spent far more efficiently… that Chelsea could stand to learn from now that someone else (City) has more spending power than them…

I think Moses is a bargain at 9 million! How much will he be worth with a 4 year contract at the champions of Europe?

Moses is young, just like sturridge was when he joined. The potential is huge as he proved with his performance against arsenal.

Your article could do with a little more thought next time.

You say Liverpool should snap him up because he’s cost effective and could develop into something nice…and that’s your argument AGAINST Chelsea signing him?
