Is the time right to add a little Brazilian flair to Manchester United’s midfield?

Since establishing himself in Brazilian club side Santos’ first team back in 2008, Ganso’s star has continued to rise and rise. Without ever playing in Europe, he’s managed to position himself as one of world football’s premier young talents. In terms of technical ability, he’s extremely difficult to beat. And at just 22-years-old he’s only going to get better.

And now The Metro claim that United have been put on ‘red alert’ after the midfielder got into a dispute about his contract extension.

Over the last couple of years he’d been linked to Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and a host of other non Premier League clubs. He’s a hot property and if there is any truth to the concerns over his contract situation, there’s sure to be a few clubs competing for his signature.

According to The Metro, Ganso has been offered a three-year extension that would boost his wages to £70k-a-week. Whilst that’s hardly a paltry sum, there are far worse players out there earning more wages than that in Europe. Consider this: Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci are both said to be picking up £60k-a-week. Ganso is said to be holding out for £150k-a-week though he may have to move clubs if he’s to pick up that sum.

Santos already struggle to deliver Neymar’s pay-package and Ganso’s payrise may end up being the straw that breaks the camel’s back. This clears the way for United to swoop in and give him the move he craves.

I can’t help but think he’d be a perfect addition to United’s squad. Santos won’t let him go for cheap (he’s got a £50m buy-out clause!) but if they can be persuaded to sell United will get their hands on a real player. Whilst Fergie has been making sensible signings as of late (Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell) Ganso would represent one of those bizarre, exciting, belief-fueling signings.

He’s got more potential than Eden Hazard. He’s more crafty than Luka Modric. He’s younger than Wesley Sneijder. With Scholes growing older, there’s a space that will need filling in United’s midfield. Ganso has the quality to fill that gap.

It’s an unlikely one – that’s for sure, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling a tinge of excitement at the mere possibility.
