Are Liverpool looking to pull off the bargain signing of the summer?

Brendan Rodgers has started his Liverpool career well. Everything he’s said has been carefully designed to get the fans onside, foster belief and increase his stock. I’m not saying that it’s a facade. I’m only saying that he’ll have to back up all this talk with a couple of good signings if he’s to really start proving himself. Of course, the real testing ground will be the Premier League next season, but for now he’s got to focus on putting the Reds in as good a position as possible.

Missing out on Gylfi Sigurdsson was regrettable. It’s how he reacts to this to this loss that’s important. And if this link in The People is anything to go by, he’s doing a good job!

They claim that Liverpool are looking to sign Fulham’s attacking dynamo Clint Dempsey, for just £6m. Now that strikes me as an absolute bargain.

Since joining Fulham back in 2007 (for just £1.5m) he’s been a mainstay for the Cottagers. He’s made 184 appearances and scored 50 goals (more than any other American in the Premier League). Last season in particular was impressive. He made 46 appearances and scored 26 goals. He was unstoppable.

At 29-years-old, following his best season yet, the feeling is that he’s beginning to enter his peak. Now is the right time to sign him, particularly if Rodgers can snap him up for just £6m.

He’s an extremely hard worker and this should serve him well if a so-called ‘big club’ comes in for him this summer. Fans tend to be snobbish about players who have spent the majority of their careers and small clubs like Fulham (no offense Fulham fans, I’m talking relatively) but you get the feeling that that’d be a mistake in the case of Dempsey.

It’s worth remembering that Fulham finished level on points with Liverpool, largely thanks to Dempsey’s input. He looks like a player who’s ready to prove himself on a bigger stage and may well be the man with the goals to fire the Reds into a Champions League position.

Liverpool found themselves short of goals last season, so they’d be foolish to pass up on a player who is renowned for scoring goals from the midfield.

What’s your take? Would Clint Dempsey be a good signing for Liverpool?

What about a cheeky bid for Van Der Vaart? Clearly has ability and knows what the PL is all about. Would also give us a lift off in terms of transfers and the type of player we can attract.

Spurs want to sell and we need a creative midfielder, to me it makes the perfect fit.

    • Jay says:

We wont sell Van Der Vaart to you guys lol, we are not stupid, if he goes it will be back to Germany because of his wives television career over there.

We dont want to sell we are already losing Modric and are spending lots this summer.

BTW I think Vertonghen at 8 million is the bigger bargain, 25 years old, 10 goals last year and player of the league winner, and he is a centre back LOL in the dutch league renowned for its great strikers but poor defenders

  • steve says:

Of course he would be a great signing.i hope it does happen, also Borini seems a good signing too.i get a feeling that Rodgers is taking the right steps.he is going to spend money to make the attack better,he knows that last year we were very bad at finishing.Dempsey’s had an amazing season and is a no brainer to sign him, especially for only 6 million.he’s also a “Kuyt” player, someone to play everywhere, hard worker..etc.

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas Aquilani
    Dempsey Borini Suarez

  • honest truth says:

Prefer Davies of Bolton and we should be ashamed of the way we are treating Andy Carroll

    • Martin Badger says:

On the other hand, Andy earns an absolute fortune for having no football ability whatsoever, while millions languish on the dole. So maybe he’s not doing so badly after all. I think I’ll save my tears for a more deserving cause.

  • collie says:

I don’t agree that Rodgers has started off his career at Liverpool well. The fact that Sigurdsson wouldn’t sign for him makes you wonder if there were personal issues. He may well have alienated Carroll by clearly not wanting him, even though he may be stuck with him because of his high price tag. More than anything, he seems inflexible because he can’t think of a way of playing with a good big man. He won’t be able to make Liverpool the new Barcelona because he won’t be able to get anything close to Messi-type players, so he should try to make a team out of the players he has or can actually get. Shankly built a fine team around Toshack and Keegan, and an excellent manager should be able to do something similar with Carroll and Suarez.

    • William says:

Could not agree with you more. … plus the big man still has alot to offer, we would never get the money we feel he is worth so why cash in on him?

      Team next year should really be;

      Reina
RB:Johnson/Kelly CB: Skrtel Agger LB: Enrique/robinson
      LCM:gerrard DM: lucas RCM: aquilani/adam
      RW: dempsey/borini CF: carroll LW:suarez

    • adam says:

Bit speculative on the doom and gloom don’t you think? Sigurdsson didn’t reject us, Rodgers made it quite clear that we offered him less than what he was asking for and we wouldn’t pay over the odds. That’s a manager’s decision, nothing to do with “personal issues”. Who say’s he’s alienated Carroll? Some media pundits? Rodgers has made it really clear that EVERYONE in the team is going to have to show they have what it takes and Andy is no different. He’s quite obviously struggled for form and it’s not at all crazy to admit that loaning him out is an option. The bloke is just being honest, isn’t that the best way to treat players and fans?
And on what basis would you say he is inflexible? He’s barely had a handful of training sessions, how could anyone possibly say that we know what his actual tactics and formations will be? If he was truly inflexible then a loan deal for Carroll would have been the first thing he’d try to seal up, but he has actually said that he wants to evaluate Andy properly, give him time and work with him to see if he can fit in the system. That sounds like he’ll be plenty flexible.
Toshack and Keegan, as wonderful as they were, played football in a different era. We’re talking nearly 40 years ago. Of course it worked well but it’s pretty simplistic to compare the two of them to our current strike force simply because one guy is big and likes to head the ball and the other guy is small and has good feet. Andy Carroll is a totally different footballer to John Toshack and I don’t think you’d find that Shankly was terribly flexible in his tactics either. You either did what the manager wanted or you sat on the bench.

      • Peter LFC says:

This is the most intelligent post on here. I totally agree, BR has been as up front and honest as I have seen any manager. He seems intelligent, doesn’t seem to wind the press up, and I think he will become one of the greats. Everything around Andy Carroll has be generated by the press. As soon as BR even mentioned his name, they went head long into creating speculative stories. Unfortunately, because of his price tag, and obvious lack of form, he is a journalists wet dream! Keep it up Rogers, Great signing in Borini, would like to see Sturridge, Gaston, A Johnson & Dempsey. Say what you want about Dempsey, but he has bags of Prem experience that I think all the young players we are signing would really benefit from. And he doesn’t hit the woodwork very often…

    • Redfernando says:

stuck in the past, typical! Give the guy a chance to implement his system. As for Carroll, it’s useless talking about him anymore lets just wait and see what happens

  • The Rock says:

Dempsey is a good player, but at 29 is to old!!! Looking at the stats in the article, he’s had one impressive season scoring more than half of his 50 goals in one season… good player, but at 6m is too much… Are we looking at another Adam???

    • Moocher says:

      Nobody can be that bad!!

    • Chrisred85 says:

I think he is worth it in many ways if we got 3 years out of him and say he played a part in getting us in the CL I think it be worth it 6m we will make that of his back in the USA so I would nearly put him down as a player who would pay for himself Adams is a joke talk about getting the chance of your life an not taking it… but as much as I think the world of him how did kenny blow that much money on s**t players I just can’t get my head around it

  • Joe says:

He obviously never had issues with him or we wouldnt have been on his to Swansea until Rodgers left, so stop trying to talk like your a know it all you divvy

  • Bomber25 says:

At 29 years he is too old. It goes against the Fenway Sports Group’s policy of recruiting young players.

  • RedRoy says:

We need another striker maybe two, i’d rather not buy Dempsey as he’s too old, also he’s not an out and out striker. Borini could be o.k. Carroll could be of use but we need top class to compliment Suarez (and keep him sweet). Also a quality Defensive midfielder needed. YNWA.

  • dill says:

we brought adam cause he had 1 good season in our league and look how well hes done and carrol also had 1 good season so we fall for that and buy him as well and now were talking about signing dempsey cause hes also just had 1 good season and not gettin any younger either.while we f**k around trying to get players from teams that generally finish below us in the league the teams we need to be beating to get champions league are buying in international stars.seems to me these teams are just pulling further clear of us every year and buying crap like i.e adam, henderson doesnt help.but dont worry fellow liverpool fans were laughing cause weve got cole back and he had a great season at lille.4 goals and 2 assists in 31 league appearances lol.Anyone that thinks thats a great return for an attacking midfielder in a weeker league than the prem i might add needs there head tested.I would rather be in chelseas shoes and be in a position where we could get rid of players that dont even get in our squad and let them have em.we might be getting borrini who managed 4 years in chelseas reserves.hes amazing cause he scored 6 goals in 12 games for swansea in the championship. No way could spurs, man u,chelsea and arsenal strikers get 6 goals in 12 in the championship lol.im comparing to these teams cause these are the teams were competing with to get champions league.

    • The Talent says:

I concur. Finally someone speaks some bloody sense.

    • royce says:

Yes i agree they must bring in younger players who are good value for money Dempsey wont cut it and has no sell on value.

    • Eoin says:

Borini scored a goal every 112 minutes he played for Roma last season, the third best in Serie A. And that’s in a league where it’s extemely difficult to score goals – far more difficult than in the Premiership. He’s just turned 21 and he has played the last season in Italy, having played on loan to Swansea from Chelsea for the last three months of the season before. He was at Chelsea for two years, not four. Try actually quoting hard facts instead of ill informed ranting. On the subject of rejects from other clubs, consider Pique of Barcelona and Spain – released by Man U, now a World Cup winner, A Euro winner a Champions League winner etc etc. You need to get real regarding our current predicament. We can’t either afford or attract huge names at the moment. The only way back to the top is either through a mega wealthy buyout like City, or through good transfer dealings in sensibly priced players and in the development of the many talented youth players we have

    • Peter LFC says:

I think a lot of Liverpool fans are living in 2005. WE FINISHED 8TH LAST SEASON! We are not going to attract the same players as Chelsea/Arsenal/Man U/Tottenham. We have no European football to offer them. At this stage in time, and probably for the next couple of seasons, we need good solid players, who can perform in the prem and hopefully send us back into 4th, THEN we can look to by some world class players. But until then, we have to be realistic with who we WANT to buy, and who we can ACTUALLY attract! I agree with buy young players who have bags of potential, but I also think we need a couple of experienced players in there with good prem experience, to help the younsters develop. Buying Borini is a great buy, put him with Dempsey & Gerrard who both have good prem experience to help him along, throw Suarez in there as well, that is looking like a union which could work, on and off the pitch. With regards to I’ve been playing Fantasy football for a few years now, and Dempsey has always been a top points player, its not all about the goals, theres playing a good quality 90 mins, and getting assists. I think he would be a great signing for 6 mill. Saying that I would still love to see Sturridge, Johnson or Gaston Ramirez sign before the end of the summer!

  • M. says:

Carroll, Downing & Adam should never be closer to LFC. Those ordinary British garbage were purchased at multiple times by a raciest manager for their place of birth. Moreover, to establish them, KD sold Mirales, loaned Acqualini & sidelined Maxi & Kyut.

Even Kyut was far better pairing Luiz, than donkey Carroll. It’s an insult that this donkey replaced a stallion.

    • Ruari says:

I like how everyone forgets that meireles put in a transfer request on the last day of the transfer window

      • M. says:

Let’s be honest with us; after all It’s the Club comes first. KD was extremely partial to British born players & it was evident when he loaned out Acqualini despite being arguably the player of Pre-season for LFC. Raul had a contract which stated that based on performance his salary (which was astonishingly low compared to Cole or Downing) ll be reviewed. After his ’10/’11 performance, he deserved a pay raise, but wasn’t granted. Even had he stayed in LFC, he would had been either loaned like Acqua or despite being a Portuguese international, would have been dumped to bench to accommodate/establish a player like Adam, who was not even a Scotland regular. This exactly what was done with Kyut & Maxi to establish Downing, Hendrson & Carroll.

At 27, at his peak, Raul was not ready to accept either & opted to join a far better squad with his fellow countryman as Manager. I was quitehappy that he had the self respect to place a transfer request.

KD, as a player was, is & ‘ll be my hero, but he didn’t do justice to the LFC motto ‘never walk alone’. I am sorry that he had to be sacked, but would have wished had he not taken the task for long term. He was too mean in modern club management in global context, incompetent & biased.

  • nino fortune says:

Keep de believe liverpool will be best dis season truth me, meany help tell Rodger 2 keep faith on Aguilani n carrol and play dem dis season, I believe dis season we be ours.Say liverpool,up liverpool. I hail

  • Yerima says:

Lpfc just problem of strikers, suppose to bring, tello, borini, bryth, benzama, cavani,RvP,dzecko,if we get two of them is Ok

  • Peter says:

Cant we make a cheeky bid 4 real madrid midfielder N.Sahin…offer hm 1st team football,o a loan deal?

  • RoGue says:

Instead of looking at Dempsey why not Iker muniain instead? Muniain is about 10 years younger. Not to mention, he too had a great 2011/12. To add to that, Muniain has plenty of time to grow into a much better player whereas Dempsey is way past his peak so, why not Muniain? He’ll probably cost double the money but he’ll be worth it for sure. AS for the left, I would think Adam Johnson is the ideal player. He normally plays on the right but he’s a left footer so I don’t see it as a problem for him to adapt to playing on the left. With these 2 signings, LFC might actually be able to qualify for a champs league spot at least.

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas Joe Cole
    Muniain Suarez A. Johnson

  • RoGue says:

Oh, and if the american owners would chip in a little more how about signing Javi Martinez. He’s young and versatile and he’s good in the air. He’s got great vision too I would say. If BR makes an effort to buy him, our midfield would be splendid. With the likes of Gerrard, Lucas, Javi Martinez and Joe Cole, Henderson, Adam(preferably sold) and Shelvey all fighting for first team action.

  • jim says:

It would be nice if these American clowns put their hands in the money pot and bought us some world class players to go with the very few we have at this minute.

  • AlwaysRed says:

“And if this link in The People is anything to go by” – ha ha ha. Brilliant!!

  • Redfernando says:

Some people are ready to attack Rogers even before he starts simply because of what happened with Dalglish… Quite pathetic! Let the guy have his fair chance rather than all this doom and gloom!

  • collie says:

Liverpool being Liverpool, Rodgers will get a chance, but it is hard to see more than a mid-table side emerging from the talent he has available, and his visions of Barcelona-on-the-Mersey don’t seem realistic. He should select the players who want to be there and will work hard, and go from there, adding new talent and young players where he can. Liverpool are not Stoke, but they are not Barcelona either, and finding the right way of using the available players is the hardest job a manager has to do.
