Why it’s vitally important that United move quickly for Modric:

|

Attacking midfield has been an area of weakness over the past few seasons for Manchester United. Having to recall veteran Paul Scholes from his retirement came as a stroke of genius or, maybe, desperation from Sir Alex Ferguson earlier on in the season. But with Scholes liking to drop deep and dictate play, The Red Devils have missed a cutting edge; that player which can produce a killer pass at the right moment. This explains why Luka Modric is the missing piece to the Manchester United jigsaw. The Tottenham midfielder has been linked to a move to Old Trafford for quite some time (source: Daily Mail)

The tricky midfielder has been a stalwart in the Tottenham squad over the past few seasons. His quality on the ball has drastically increased since joining from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 and reports suggest that Manchester United are set to make a big money move for the Croatian playmaker. However, with Real Madrid rumoured to be interested, Sir Alex must move quickly to gain Modric’s signature.

Modric has reportedly expressed his desire to move on to bigger and better things but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is almost certainly going to stand firm and prevent any transfer from being made this summer. The departure of manager Harry Redknapp may also influence Modric’s decision to leave, making it hard for Levy to persuade him to stay.

The Croatian could certainly add to United’s offensive threat. His introduction would prevent Wayne Rooney from dropping deeper to get the ball and therefore make their strike force a greater danger to Premier League defences. Modric also has the ability to compete with the world’s best midfield players. We saw evidence of that in Croatia’s final Euro 2012 group game against Spain. Despite the World and European champions not being at their best, Luka Modric displayed his attacking and defensive attributes and outshone the Spanish midfield.

United need to be able to compete with rivals Manchester City as they bid for their 20th league title. In both derby games last season, City showed why they were worthy winners of the Premier League crown. The Blues have numerous game-changing players at their disposal: David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, to name a few and this is where the red side of Manchester has been lacking. More so in the derby match at the Etihad Stadium, United were unable to unlock the stern City defence.

So, by looking at the previous information, you could say that Luka Modric ticks all the boxes for Manchester United. However, it’s going to be a hard to persuade Modric to move to Old Trafford ahead of a switch to the almighty Real Madrid. Madrid certainly have the funds to entice Modric to the Bernabeau but can they guarantee him a starting place ahead of players like Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso and Kaka? A move to United makes sense for the Croatian and he seems to be at home in the Premier League. Let’s hope that this transfer saga is resolved quickly for the benefit of all the clubs.
