Reports suggest that Nani could be on his way to Manchester City in a £40m moveIt’s difficult to know what to make of Nani’s situation at Manchester United. He’s said to be in negotiations with the club, looking for an extension to his current deal (which runs for a further two years). But The Mirror recently ran a story which suggested that talks have all but broken down.

They claim that United may be ready to cash in on the 25-year-old after five successful seasons together. It’s also suggested that Nani has compromised his initial demands twice in order to speed negotiations along, but Manchester United have failed to come to any agreement.

This story arrives just a couple of weeks after Nani admitted he was considering his future:

“I have had five seasons at Manchester United and have won all the titles. Now I am really happy, but I don’t know about my future. Now I will study opportunities. Football is not only about England or Spain. It is possible to enjoy success in other countries. My agent is waiting on news about United. We have presented a counter-offer and now we are waiting on an offer from the club.”

It seems that the tables have turned. Whilst Nani and his agrent started off playing a little hardball, Manchester United have now put them in a position where they’ve been forced to negotiate down.

The truth is, he plays second fiddle to Antonio Valencia over on the right and he’s not as important to Manchester United as he likes to think.

Having said that, there are very few players who offer the same levels of talent as Nani in world football. He’s got sublime feet, can move the ball about well and always ends up providing assists (if not goals). He’s one of a select few at United who can create something out of nothing. His technical ability is superb and it’d be a real shame to see him go.

So if his demands aren’t too high, I hope Fergie offers him a new contract with fair terms. I’ve seen him described before as United’s ‘last great entertainer’ and perhaps that’s true. He’s a genuine flair player who combines his skill with end product. It’d be a real shame to see him go and flourish at another club, but that’s what United risk if they don’t extend his contract.

What’s your take? Does Nani merit a new deal or is it time he moved on?
