£15m well spent by Liverpool?

|

As Liverpool look to tie up a deal for Hoffenheim’s well-regarded midfielder, Gylfi Sigurdsson, fans are no doubt turning their attention spans to ponder where the next addition may be made. After a torrid 2011/12 season, major changes need to be made to this squad and it’s clear that one signing wont do the job. So where should the Reds, now led by ex-Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers, look next?

Well, according to the Sunday Express, Liverpool’s next ‘top target’ is Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge. The striker would effectively be stepping into Dirk Kuyt shoes, but would offer much more than hard-work and grit. Daniel Sturridge has pace and he can finish – two attributes that Kuyt often struggled with.

According to the Express, Chelsea have slapped a £15m price-tag on the young forward. That’s a relatively paltry sum considering that the Red’s spent £35m on perennial underachiever Andy Carroll a couple of January’s ago. Sturridge may not be at the Euros, but he has just as much potential as Carroll and could go on to be a real star.

Of course, Liverpool may worry that if they did sign Sturridge, he’d follow in Carroll’s footsteps and fail to replicate past form at Anfield.

But the two are completely different players with completely different backgrounds. For a start, Sturridge knows the pressure that comes with laying for a big club. Unlike Carroll, there’s no real ‘step-up’ to be made. Without wanting to be disparaging, it’d probably represent a bit of a step down for the young forward.

On the other hand, it would also act as a marker for his ambition. Though Chelsea remain a competitive side, Sturridge is not getting enough game time at the club and when he does play he’s often forced out wide into a position he doesn’t favour.

A move away from Stamford Bridge to a club with pretensions of a top four finish who can offer him regular game-time (he and Luis Suarez would likely be the two first choice strikers, should Andy Carroll continue to underperform) may well be the perfect move.

Liverpool have spent the last couple of seasons snapping up the best of young British talent. With that philosophy in mind, Sturridge’s footballing ability and his clinical nature in front of goal, he’d surely make for a great addition. He’s the kind of player that could even get Liverpool back to where they want to be.

What’s your take? Would Daniel Sturridge make for a good Liverpool signing?

Good article as always Harry. I think you’re being a bit harsh on Big Andy though – he’s put in the hard work this season and it started to pay dividends towards the tail-end of the season and he looked very good against Sweden on international duty.

I think Sturridge would be a great signing for Liverpool. Assuming that Rodgers brings the 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 formation he used at Swansea then Carroll up top with Gerrard behind him and Sturridge and Suarez flanking him could be brilliant.

Thanks. Still not sure about Carroll. He has looked good in a couple of games, but the proof will be in the pudding. He needs to be performing week-in and week-out like he did for Newcastle before he can be considered to have ‘made it’.

Chelsea to Liverpool is not a step down mate. Sorry about that…

    • Harry Cloke says:

In terms of aspirations of winning things, it’s a massive step down. I’m not interested in dragging up the past, I’m interested in which club is more likely to win something next season. I’m sure that will be a factor in Sturridge’s decision too.

What a good article I must say well done. Daniel will be a good signing certainly he could partner up with Suarez and that two can create a mean goal score force I will sign that ‘Boy’

Another shite player for stupid fees and then the transfer, when do we learn?

Harry Cloke you post is appaling, you seem to know nothing about Liverpool, you write without fact, you have no insight, you are guessing at your views with regards to how young over rated Sturridge would settle, and carroll is a completely different player!

who would Daniel Sturridge come into replace kuyt, who was almost 80% at his time at liverpool used as a make weight right winger? – again your crap.

Your saying carroll san suarez are to start next year, they might not?

dont give up your day job please? dreadful

    • Harry Cloke says:

      What?

    • Danny B says:

I barely understood a word of that rant! I reckon the article is written well enough!! Personally I reckon we do need another striker, just to cover carol or to give lfc a different option in formation!! Kuyt was playin as back up to Caroll last season and now he will be going who do we have now?

  • royce says:

I think Sturridge would be a nice addition to the club and i am hoping the step down comment was only in regards to the fact that the club cannot offer C.L football next season.

  • steve says:

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
