At £10m surely this young British talent would be a steal for Liverpool?

When it comes to Adam Johnson, it’s difficult to know who to believe. According to some sources he’s perfectly content at the Etihad stadium, whilst according to others he’s itching for a move. One paper will say that Roberto Mancini is prepared to sell the 24-year-old, whilst another will claim that Manchester City view him as a keeper.

One of these stories, run by the Daily Star, claim that Manchester City would entertain bids of around £10m for Adam Johnson’s services. Of course, it’s difficult to know exactly how true this is. Man City spent £8m bringing Johnson in from Middlesbrough and he’s improved in quality significantly in the proceeding years. Given his status as a young British talent (and given that Liverpool spent approximately £20m on Jordan Henderson last summer) that price tag seems rather low.

Perhaps, moneybags Manchester City are merely exercising their more generous side. He’s a player who hasn’t got a fair run of games in the first team and they may well be prepared to accept bids below his worth in order to give him the exit route he deserves. He’s a good player but he’s perhaps not as fully formed as a number of others in City’s roster so it’s fair to say he’ll always be a part of the squad’s second string.

This incongruous price-tag has come on the back of The Mirror running a story that claims Liverpool are interested in signing Johnson. Now £10m doesn’t seem like to steep a price for the Reds to pay when it comes to a player with as much potential as Johnson.

Last summer Liverpool gambled on Stewart Downing. I think it’s fair to say that that experiment was a failure. No League goals, after 72 shots is an absolutely dreadful return. The Reds need a player like Johnson to run the wings. A player who offers results, not just potential. If the club are ever to drag themselves back up to the Premier League, Johnson is exactly the kind of player they should be looking at.

So if there’s any truth to the claims that he currently has a £10m price-tag, I think Liverpool should snap him up – preferably before any good performances in the Euros bolster his valuation.

What’s your take? Would he be a bargain signing? Should Liverpool shoot for more fully formed players?

    10mill? yeah right 15 minimum

  • Alan says:

£10m? Not a chance get real!

  • Kaleem says:

After the British talent Kenny signed last season, I would not take this 3rd choice at ManC and no place in England squad talent for even £50. Absuloutely rubbish suggestion. The world is full of reasonably priced exciting talent. Value for money and high return on investment!!!!!

    • cranky says:

what a dumb statement wouldn’t take him for £50 well i believe if he is being sold and for a price of 10 million then alot of clubs would be in for him and the fact he hasn’t got the games at man c represents him not getting in the England squad and thirdly man c have spent heavily on world class talents in every area which makes it very difficult for an up and coming player to get the games and playing time i would take him in a heart beat at that price!!

    • chunky says:

Absolutely right with you! He can’t get a game at City nor England squad so why have him at Anfield. Not on!

      • D.H says:

He can’t get on the City team so you won’t have him on the Liverpool team? Considering Carroll and Downing get on your team I’m in awe that you wouldn’t take him, you clearly view your team as better than it is, take away the history and name of the club and your just another average mid table team to be quite honest,
        Johnson > Downing
Played much less games and got many more goals and assists!

    • ka says:

wooow seriously adam johnson is wicked player, he should of been in the england squad, if i had to choose between downing and johnson its a no brainer johnson all day, and be real 10 million is worth it thats not expensive for a player like adam johnson

  • Diplo says:

10 million.. Yea ok.. City only bought him for 7! Theres no way he’s going for 10

  • maljames says:

£10m is not a cheap price for a player who isn’t a first team regular. the fact that Liverpool paid a shocking £20m for Downing and £16m for Henderson does not mean Johnson would be cheap for that price. The money Dalglish and Comolli squandered on these two, and £9m for Charlie Adam is nothing short of complete incompetence

  • Vialli says:

Would take for £10mil. He is a good player and turned games around for City once or twice. There is a reason he’s not played regular, it could be that Mancini prefers his signings? Or he just didn’t fit with his system.
We need wide exciting players. AJ is one of those, he’s english which when that rule comes into play will be worth more than £10mil.
If you consider what Rodgers has done with lesser talented players than AJ, he could make £10mil seem a bargain

    • sean says:

Mancini signed Johnson from Middlesborough. Johnson is a good player but is unfortunate in that there are others at City -Silva, Nasri- who are better.

  • Mancunian Blue says:

What a waste of web space this article is. Johnson never made the squad for the euros so how will his price go up? As far as you liverpool fans are concerned if you look at his stats he is better than downing (assists), henderson (tackles) and carrol (Goals) put together and played less than half the games downing played. Its a shame that the england manager decided to add half the english players from liverpool who could only finish 8th in the league and then the rest from 6th place chelsea. England will win nothing with these average players. I would rather have an injured johnson than downing any day. CTID

    • Blackwog says:

The only reason there are more LFC players in Euro is because Man C don’t have any left because they keep buying anyone who isn’t English.
But i do agree AJ should have been there before Downing.

  • Chris says:

England consider Downing better?! And we all know how shit he is.

    • Paul harris says:

they dont they are just aware downing has had more match time this season and will be phisically fitter

  • Boss says:

Get him.. This guy is way better then Downing.

  • magnumopus says:

Downing has had one bad season and you all seem to want to crucify him. Get a life will ya… bet he has a much better season under Rodgers!

    • Moocher says:

SD has had a lot of very ordinary seasons. He had a golden opportunity to shine & step up at LFC, but he failed miserably. He has a very poor attacking ethos in his play & no aggression. I live in hope that maybe BR can ‘instil’ this into his game. We will wait & see. I don’t think people want to see him crucified, they just judge him on what they see.

  • meza says:

a.j is alot better than downing or henderson FACT so sort ya self out u dnt no shit 10m will be a bargain if its true i fink defo shud snap him up

  • ka says:

AJ is is lot better than the wingers liverpool have so that would be a good buy, downing is crap end of, chamberlain and milner are ahead of him in the england squad milner sucks and chamnerlain is 18 and already better than downing so please stop acting like downing is good coz he aint

  • sr says:

£9M for Charlie Adam….. still makes me chuckle! How totally inept was Kenny Dalglish?!

    • Moocher says:

I agree with you. CA is a player who is a total ‘non fit’ for LFC & his purchase is a reflection on how inept KD was. I still can’t believe how much was spent on very ordinary players. I hope this has stopped at Liverpool this year. LFC need to to acquire someone who is more shrewd in the transfer market & a competent scouting network.

  • M a T T y says:

I think hes a good player but this article is complete garbage cause at the end its says that he may improve at the euros he is not even in the squad for euros

  • Fgj says:

Yeah good performances at the euros, are you thick? He didn’t get in the squad!!

  • McWikid says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself, YNWA!

  • Scribbler says:

“preferably before any good performances in the Euros bolster his valuation.” What?

  • lee says:

We saw “British Talent” hunting Shadows against Spain..Tello £7m ..is a better deal !

  • Jamie says:

Man city know the market. They’ll want to raise funds. They know Henderson went for 20, downing for about 20, Carroll for 35, glen Johnson for around 17, Milner for 25, chamberlain cost arsenal 12 million and that was when he was 16! No way will man city let young English talent move for 10 million.

  • Paul harris says:

he has potential to be great, he has pace, skill and shooting accuracy. when he did play for city last year, he had some great games and scored a few goals. Its like saying “I wouldnt take berbatov because he cant make uniteds first team” they are still class players who just dont get a chance in great sides
