Still, despite all that achievements won by Didier Drogba, he continues to divide opinion. Some are enthralled by the raw power and desire the Ivorian has whereas some are overwhelmingly frustrated by the histrionics displayed. The antics are simply not needed and have overshadowed the talent he has at times. Having said that though Drogba has treated football with the respect it deserves and it was only fitting that he played such a pivotal role in Chelsea’s European triumph as he signed off from the club in style. It was confirmed recently Drogba was not to be offered a new contract, surprisingly, so where can we expect to see him next?
A lot has been said about a potential move to Shanghai Shenhua where a reunion with Nicolas Anelka would be on the cards. The move to China would be lucrative but also slightly premature. The Chinese league is one that represents the graveyard of once great footballers or the sanctuary of money driven players. Drogba is neither, despite being 34 he showed he still has the power and quality to pose a threat to high class defenders and deliver pulses of fright into them. The rumours about a move to China have never disappeared so perhaps it may happen but it’s been another rumour which has crept up that has held the most interest.
So what about Manchester United? The big Ivorian has been tempted with a move to Old Trafford in the past. There’s even been a burgeoning Facebook group set-up in honour of this transfer. Sir Alex is always linked to a big name seeking pastures new and perhaps Drogba would prove to be a very shrewd move indeed. With Michael Owen released, Dimitar Berbatov set to depart and Federico Macheda seemingly a forgotten man Ferguson now finds himself genuinely short of strikers to accompany either Wayne Rooney or Danny Welbeck. Drogba would provide a perfect foil for either man and could be promised significant game time as Welbeck’s consistency tends to waver. He is also a great weapon to have coming from the bench, something Ferguson will be aware off.
With no transfer fee required the decision to take a chance of Drogba is somewhat of a no brainer. A man that scores 20 goals a season still at 34 should be given the chance. He has shown that despite his age he continues to genuinely frighten defenses and his pure aggression gives the team a solid core.
Ferguson has pulled of various coup’s in his time, signing Henrik Larsson springs to mind, where he has been able to knock years off a player. Could Drogba be the latest player to benefit from Ferguson’s magic touch?
