Tottenham or Liverpool: Where does the future lie for Clint Dempsey?

Clint Dempsey has had his most productive season to date.  The American has notched up 16 goals this season, his most successful yet, and has rightfully caught the eye of the premier leagues leading clubs.  At 29 years old Dempsey must make the most important decision so far in his career as his next move could well be his last should he be successful wherever he goes.  So where may we see Dempsey next year?

Arsenal is one of the clubs to be most heavily linked with Dempsey’s signature but it seems unlikely he will be arriving to ply his trade at the Emirates next season.  As everyone knows, Arsene Wenger is reluctant to splash out on a player and with the recently confirmed signing of Lukas Podolski the possibility of Dempsey arriving as well appears slim.  And why would they need him?  Wenger could have Van Persie together with Aaron Ramsey, Mikael Arteta all at his disposal and also has Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott both desiring a more central spot in the starting eleven.  So perhaps Dempsey wouldn’t actually get in Arsenal’s starting side, something he cannot afford at 29 years of age.

Tottenham could be another option for Dempsey and more suited to the American.  The impact of Rafael Van Der Vart has arguably started to fade of late and the uncertainty surrounding Emmanuel Adebayor remains.  This could leave a slot open for Dempsey who certainly has an admirer in Harry Redknapp and would definitely consider Tottenham as an exciting option.

However, recent comments from Liverpool’s chief executive Tom Werner have perhaps swayed the guesswork of Dempsey’s next club towards Anfield.  Werner was talking about Liverpool’s prospected summer of transfer dealings and had this to say about his fellow American, ‘We never talk publicly about our transfer targets. However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad’.  A strange statement from a clubs chief executive but it could be suggesting that they will be in the market for Dempsey this summer.  It would be no surprise if Liverpool’s owners went for Dempsey as they look to maximize their clubs appeal in their homeland America.  It would be a gamble though as it remains to be seen whether Dempsey has the ability to fit in at a top club.

A successful season in a questionable team has left Dempsey with a number of potential options this summer and it will be interesting to see which one he chooses; the glitz of Arsenal, the guaranteed starting spot at Anfield or White hart lane and potential Champions League football.
