Is it time for Manchester United to part ways with their winged-wonder?

Reports suggest that Nani could be on his way to Manchester City in a £40m moveThe difference between the Nani we saw last season and the Nani we saw this season has been a little startling. Last season he was one of the contenders for Footballer of the Year but this time round he’s often struggled to exert his influence. Despite this, he has still chipped in with a decent number of goals and assists and remains an important part of Manchester United’s squad. So it’s about time United got him to sign a new contract, right?

But according to the Daily Mail, United are currently testing the ‘transfer waters’ in case contract talks collapse. Fergie is said to be keen for Nani to agree new terms, but there’s clearly a little concern that the Portuguese winger may look to move on when his contract runs out in 2014.

Manchester United are in the priviledged position of having both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia available to fill in down the wings and may well feel that keeping Nani isn’t essential. This is all the more true given the fact that the Red Devils have been heavily linked to Lille’s winger-wonder Eden Hazard. If the Belgium International did make a big money move to United would there be any room left in this team for Nani?

He’s been at Old Trafford for 5 years now and has made 195 appearances for his club. It’s fair to say that he’s had an important role to play in United’s recent history. But he has always struck me as an extremely frustrating player. He seems to have these two month purple patches where he’s almost unstoppable but this is usually counterbalanced by periods of abject averageness. He tends to forgo the simple pass in favour of running into defenders or shooting (miles) wide. When he does opt to pass, he usually doesn’t manage to get it to another red shirt and if he’s granted set-piece duty he often fails to take full advantage.

At 25-years-old I think fans are justified in their critiques. At this stage he ought to be entering his peak, but despite his talent, it’s always his inconsistency that wins through. If United can get a decent figure for him the time may be right for him to move on. I can’t see him moving to another Premier League side, but I could see him performing well in Serie A or La Liga. What’s your take? Is it time for Nani and United to part ways?

He’s certainly no Ronaldo. I would rather him go and us get Hazard than us keep him and city get Hazard

I love Nani alot, but so selfish at time, when you need goal ,he sometimes refused to release it for teamate to score, and can watse it by trying it himself. We have abundant wingers if we can have decent amount from selling him, why not cash in, and get a central midfield player with the money. We are United and will remain United. GGMU.
