Isn’t it time that Tottenham stopped relying on this forward to provide the goods?

I’m beginning to think there was a reason why Man City were willing to finance Emmanuel Adebayor’s loan move to Tottenham. He’s the kind of player who seems to pick his performances at will. He’ll turn it on one game and then be completely anonymous the next. Whilst this was fine earlier in the season, when other players were putting in dynamic performances all over the pitch, now that Spurs have hit a poor patch of form the need for someone more consistent up front is becoming clear.

Fans may well point to his performance against Newcastle as an example of what he can provide the team. But to those people, I’d ask, has he come anywhere close to that level of excellency since? Does he still have the capacity to dominate teams? Is it possible that performance was a bit of a fluke?

Perhaps this complacency has crept into his game as he knows that he is a nailed on starter at Spurs. I can’t help but feel that it’s time to shake things up a little.

It’s my personal feeling that both Jermaine Defoe and Rafael van der Vaart should be getting more game time at White Hart Lane. Defoe is one of the few natural goal-scorers at the club and I have been surprised to see his chances limited this season. His ability in-front of goal makes Harry Redknapp’s decision to go out and get Louis Saha on loan all the more perplexing (even if that decision appears to have paid off).

Granted, he missed a few chances against Everton, but a run of games should have him find his shooting boots again and taking Ade’s place in the squad (after all, isn’t he just a short term solution?)

Then there’s VdV who’s crying out for some match-fitness. We saw last season what a fit and motivated Van der Vaart can provide, but he hasn’t had the same opportunities this year. The trouble here is that VdV and Jermaine Defoe never really seem to work well together. As there are only ten Premier League matches left, there’s little room left to experiment with Tottenham’s system. Harry has to go for what works and if nothing’s working he has to go for the more established names.

As such, I doubt Jermaine Defoe will oust Emmanuel Adebayor, but there could still be some decent opportunities for VdV coming up. And how Tottenham could do with him finding some form as the season draws to a close.

You can say the same of Defoe.

People thought City were mad but this shows why they were eager to shift him off. LOL

Forget about Defoe we are talking about Adebayor. At least you know what you are geting with Defoe.Ade.is all over the park, right wing, left wing and seldom where he should be,in the middle scoring goals.Very little ball control, forever offsideand when in possesion most times he looses the ball.I just hope Spurs manage to buy Leandro for next season.
Good article,i thought i was the only one who thought Ade should be watching from the bench.

they only problem city have now is finding some other suckers to take him for another season!

  • Phil says:

It’s the Adebayor trend kicking in. After six months at any one club, his attitude and performances start to deteriorate.

He’ll move to a new club and do exactly the same thing. As soon as a group of fans realise he isn’t the Messiah, he loses interest.

Ade started season like a house on fire, fizzled out with all his roaming and hopeless first touch, re-ignited himself for Newcastle game to welcome Saha his new partner ( or replacement ! )… then switched off again

was pleased to see Arry finally pull him off at Everton… a few non-starts too might rekindle his fire

He is a target man he provides something that no other forward at the club does, hold up play. He was never going to be prolific. He does what he is supposed to do hold the ball up so others can play off him. Our poor recent form is purely down to Bale. Ever since he started thinking he was Ronaldo wandering all over the park effecting our shape contributing nothing, shooting aimlessly from 30yds, we have been poor. Having no shape is our problem no point in scape goating the one player that allowed us to obtain 3rd in the first place.

  • JPG466 says:

Sure, Bale needs to stay left, Lennon on the right, Luka in the middle, Scottie holding

So, assuming BaLennon keep wide and provide from flanks, which weapon has been the trademark of Rednapp era, it does fall on our striker to finish.

Our shape changed when our striker began roaming on the flanks.. works in 442 but not in a 451
