How Paul Pogba’s threats had the desired effect:

The curious case of Manchester United’s French midfielder Paul Pogba is continuing to take more twists.  Everyone by now should know the issues surrounding the 19 year old; he is undoubtedly talented and is therefore trying to eek every last penny out of Manchester United and gain a new lucrative contract.  The move will be driven solely by his agent hoping for an attractive pay day for not only Pogba but also himself.  The latest twists in the saga have left the outcome of any contract talks rather difficult to predict.

A week ago it seemed a done deal that Paul Pogba would be joining Italian giants Juventus in the summer for a deal which would see the midfielder cop around £1 million a year.  It’s a staggering amount of money to be offering a player yet to prove himself at any level of football other than reserve team football.  However, a couple of substitute appearances later and it appears Pogba could be set to stay at Old Trafford.

It seems that perhaps Pogba’s recent demands for first team football combined with his threats to leave the club for Juventus have worked in securing him a place within the first team set up.  There has been a sudden inclusion of his name in the matchday squad together with 3o minute cameo’s against Athletic Blibao, West Brom and most recently Wolves.  Regarding Pogba as a player, it is still very difficult to draw too many conclusions from these performances and it still remains to be seen whether or not he will go on to achieve the heights that are expected of him.

It seems strange though that Ferguson has seemingly giving in so easily to Pogba’s demands and begun to give the French man more playing time.  In the past, the slightest disagreement between player and Ferguson would have only seen one winner and resulted in the player being shown the door.  As was the case when another highly rated midfielder Ravel Morrison was sold to West Ham due to similar contractual disputes.  But perhaps Ferguson realises he can’t afford to lose another promising starlet and begin to carry a reputation for being unable to hold onto football’s finest talents.  Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs won’t be around forever so perhaps Ferguson is beginning to look to the future reflected by his desperation to keep hold of Paul Pogba.

Or maybe there is another reason for the sudden playing time given to Paul Pogba. Could Ferguson be trying to enhance the players value before the summer?  Ferguson may well be resigned to losing the midfielder and could therefore be trying to increase the midfielders standing in football and give his club a better position when the negotiations come around.

It still remains to be seen what exactly is going on with Paul Pogba, no one really knows.  But with the summer not long away it won’t be long till we see the conclusion of another frustrating transfer saga.

Mate you do realise he can go on a free and that by fergie playing him it has no baring on his value, as utd do not receive any transfer fee, just some compensation

Only last week sky said they understood him to have agreed a new deal with us, they usually don’t just quote garbage from the tabloids so I’m hoping that they are right.

  • Darrel says:

He can leave on a free in the summer, united will get £300,000 compo that’s it… So him playing does nothing for his value, let’s hope him being picked for action by fergie means he is staying put at o/t…can’t see fergie chucking on a youngster who has (apparently last week) signed a contract with somebody else can you??? It’s a great ploy by pogba to force his way into the team by weighing up his options..utd need a centre mid, he knows this and he was playing reserve team footie.. Contract running low so he has to force his way into first team some how, if it turns out he stays then we must applaud his tenacity to take fergie on in this way, not many players get away with it(I.e ravel Morrison) over the years .fergie knows this kids gonna be quality so he ain’t gonna bite his nose off to spite his facw

Agreed. Pogba seems to have a Ronaldo-esque arrogance and belief in his own ability. He’s sure he can be a great player and no one is going to be allowed to stand in his way. Perhaps he’s deluded. But perhaps he isn’t, perhaps he’s the real deal?

Big United fan, but get this greedy lil bugger the hell away from the club, nobody has the right to hold United Ransom, Rooney is still an ignorant prick for doing so too. The difference, Rooney is a somebody, Sell Pogba for a new washer/dryer i wont ever cheer for this kid.

  • ChrisW says:

We don’t really know, but this is my guess about what has happened, based on the various snippets of information floating around:

Pogba thought he should have been getting first team appearances from the start of the season. But he didn’t get them, even though our midfield was riddled with injuries, so he became disillusioned and asked his agent to look around for other possible clubs for next season. Juventus were interested and he reached an informal agreement with them (nothing binding, nothing signed).

In the new year Ferguson belatedly started giving Pogba chances in the first team, but when he found out about the Juventus deal he dropped him. However, the club really didn’t want to lose another star youngster after getting rid of Morrison and the Glazers will have been horrified at seeing a prospect who could be worth tens of millions in a few years time leave for next to nothing. Also Pogba wasn’t really sure he wanted to go to Juventus. So they all got round the table and hashed out an agreement: Pogba would not commit himself to any other club before the summer. He would get his chances in the first team and after the season ends the club would make him a new offer. An improved offer if he has played well enough to justify it.

They can only have made this kind of agreement with him if they believed that he didn’t really want to leave and just needed reassuring that he had a future at Old Trafford and wouldn’t be held back unnecessarily. Hence Ferguson the other day saying publically that “he’s a first team player, no question about that”.

I have a feeling SAF is going to give him enough games to get a PL winner’s medal should United go on to win it this season. Give the young lad a taste of success and see that desire grow.

Pogba has consistently said he wants to stay at United and win (before this dispute) and it seems that a run of games, some experience with the first team and possibly a trophy at the end of season will be enough to keep him.

  • Totem says:

Morrison didn’t leave because of contract negotiations, United had enough of his off field behaviour which is well documented. He had more than enough chances to turn himself around but didn’t take any of them so he was shown the door. Hope you enjoy playing in the Championship with West Ham Ravel, that’s a real step up from United, well done!

  • olly g says:

You do know he can leave on a free Francis? Idiot.

  • Wok Chef says:

Olly G leave Francis alone, he clearly did not know about this thing that Pogba could leave on a free, but like others have said, Pogba is arrogant and he shouldn’t be controlling United, its wrong. Pogba is a good player but United can attract better. It wont make any difference if he stays or leaves in my opinion.
