Does Aaron Ramsey have a long-term future with Arsenal?

I don’t think there’s an Arsenal player that fans are more mixed on than Aaron Ramsey. Depending on which camp you fall in the young Welshman is either a man with a lot of potential and a big future, or a major source of frustration. My question to those who have lost patience with him: can’t he be both? Can’t we accept that circumstances have combined to ensure a somewhat transitional season for Aaron Ramsey?

Let’s not forget, it wasn’t so long ago that he made a return from a shocking, career-threatening leg-break. Now if that’s not something that would put your professional sporting career on the backburner, I don’t know what is. When your body suffers a trauma like that it often takes years to heal. It’d be churlish to expect him to be at his best already.

All this is made more true by the fact that he’s only 21-years-old. Are fans really getting on the back of a player this young who has already been through so much? It’s clear that he’s been afforded more responsibilities than he should have this season. That’s down to poor spending in the summer and an injury to Jack Wilshere that has seen him out for the whole season (thus far). There’s no way he’d be getting that much game time had Wilshere not been stretchered off during the Emirates Cup.

All of which makes me wonder – despite his frustrating nature being somewhat defensible, does he have a future at the club? With everybody fit he’s not on the list of starters. If Arsene Wenger decides to bring in another midfielder this summer he’ll be forced even further back on the pecking order.

In an Arsenal team free of injuries I think it’s fair to say that Alex Song, Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere make up the midfield trio. Thanks to injuries Wenger has been forced to experiment and has deployed Tomas Rosicky through the centre where he has excelled. As a result of impressive displays from the Czech against Spurs and AC Milan most will now agree that he has ousted Ramsey from the Gunner’s starting line-up.

Then what happens if Diaby ever recovers his fitness and form? The gangly Frenchman went through a similar injury to Ramsey’s but never really seems to have recovered. Though he has been written off by many, when he does finally get a proper run of games in the squad he’ll have a chance to prove his worth and we may well see that he’s good enough for a starting berth.

If that’s the case, what happens to Ramsey? He’ll have all these players in front of him and may well find himself frustrated by a lack of opportunities. So the question remains: does Aaron Ramsey have a future with Arsenal Football Club?

He is already a top class midfielder. Technically excellent, he also boasts a strong passing range and good dribbling skills. Combine this with his vision and you’ve got a player. I can’t wait to see him and Wilshire playing together. If I’ve a criticism, it is that he should be more confident and impose himself a bit more, but that is improving by the week. He seems to always want the ball, which is a great sign. I think they’d love him at Old Trafford if there was no room at Arsenal. It won’t come to that though as I’m nearly certain he will partner Song and Wilshire in a 3 man midfield when all are fit. Bar City’s combo of Silva, Toure plus donkey, it is the best combination in the Premier league by a mile, or a at least it will be. Extreme Conviction!!

  • John Gee says:

Of course he does. Due to circumstances he was overplayed in the first half of the season, and carried the midfield. He visibly tired at Christmas and will return fresh. Dont forget the injury he is still getting over, it takes eighteen months.

I think that Rambo could do a job on the right side, if we switch back to 4-4-2. Personally, I don’t think Song is good for us, but an important squad player. Squad-wise we light on quality, but heavy on personnel. Offloading some deadwood wil be very problematic – who’s going to sign the players and pay them the wages they are on at Arsenal?

  • Yam says:

his awful and should be loaned out for at least 2 seasons before he even thinks about putting the gunners shirt

  • Yam says:

Holywood gooner is a twat! without song this season we wouldnt be fighting for champions league. With our current mids song is the stand out player so far this season

  • Gerry Lennon says:

I think it is a legitimate question, but probably asked at the wrong time.
Much depends on Jack wilshere’s progress. Not only does he have to avoid any further setbacks, he also has to get back to a high standard he has set himself, and each week the games left tick by.
Follow that with any other injuries to our midfield?
Finally, their is Ramsey himself. Now he is not an automatic starter, and has had a break, he may feel under less pressure and with that improve his own game?
I think comparisons to him and Diaby, or even Gibbs, are hard to sustain. Ramsey had the one bad injury but has been playing regularly for over a year now. The other two have had repeated setbacks that have had many fans call time on both. Yet few can deny that with Gibbs return, we finally get a proper left back, and has brought a better balance to the team?
We saw a glimpse of what Diaby may yet offer, and was unfortunate to be rushed on to the field after Arteta’s injury, instead of being introduced to see out the last 10 minutes? Given his history he is going to have to take it very steady before commanding a starting line up.
That said, I hope both can reach their potential before this season ends. Which is why I think any discussion on Ramsey’ future is premature. I am willing to see how he is when he not seen as ‘the replacement for Cesc Fabregas’, rather as a promising midfielder who has yet to fulfil his potential.

  • Gunnerramma says:

He simply isn’t good enough. Our recent good form has been because he isn’t in the middle of the park slowing things down, demanding the ball and uselessly passing it backwards, taking pot shots at the crowd. He has had more than enough opportunities to show his quality and he has failed. Mark my words if he plays we are worse off.

  • meaner says:

Don’t tell me Ramilson is 21, Walcott is 22. Both of them have played enough competitive games. They have no potential, overrated, simply not good enough for Arsenal.

  • gman says:

Rambo needs time, too much too soon I’m afraid.
As for comments on Song from Hollywood…I am lost. One of the best CDMs in the game, and nice to see very few injuries in that type of position, along with big assists this year, and big goals last year. Don’t understand that knock on Song.

  • Kentishgooner says:

Some idiots who comment need to grow up. U don’t know the player, u don’t see him train, u judge every player by their last 5 games which is terrible! People who think he is shit probs wanted to sell RVP last summer as well. Young players form goes up and down. When Wilshere comes back u will probs write him off if he takes more than 5 games to find form. Support ur players! And stop pretending you know what you are talking about. If u did u would be A chief scout by now. Now, fury vented at commenters. Decent article mate! That rant wasn’t aimed at u it was aimed at idiots like Yam, gunnerramma and meaner.

  • mah says:

do think he has a future, cuz of the way he plays, he runs for no reason, his passing is very weak and inaccurate & keeps taking the ball from his won team mates and ruins the play. He’ll be better off coming on as a substitute.
