Can Real Madrid’s ‘forgotten gem’ really bolster Arsenal’s midfield?

At the moment Real Madrid’s cast-offs seem to be doing the rounds in the rumour mill. A week or so ago Madrid’s ‘forgotten gem’ Nuri Sahin was linked to Manchester United in a move that would provide cover for the gaping hole in their squad that would evolve in Paul Scholes’ absence. Now Nuri Sahin has found himself linked to the Gunners. According to talkSPORT Arsenal were interested in Sahin back in his Borussia Dortmund days but failed to compete with Real Madrid for his signature.

The belief is that now he’s found himself ostracised at Madrid, Arsenal are looking to provide him with an escape route. But is he the kind of signing Arsenal need and would Real Madrid be willing to sell?

It’d take an extremely unreasonable man to keep Sahin at Real Madrid. The Turkish international has seen his career reach a standstill at Madrid after having made just one La Liga appearance this term. This is all the more disappointing considering the fact that he was widely held to be one of world football’s brightest young talents just a year ago. What he really needs is game time so that he can continue along the path to becoming a super star, not to bide his time on the bench.

As a result, there’s sure to be heavy competition for his signature this summer. Along with Manchester United and Arsenal, cash-rich Malaga are thought to be interested and they certainly have the capital to engage in a bidding war.

At 23-years-old, he’s all set to enter the peak of his career. Yes he’s effectively had a year chipped out of his progression, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a remarkably talented young player. Whilst the Gunners have a pretty congested midfield, I’m not sure that the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta or Alex Song (though his through-balls this season have been a sight to behold) over the same level of creativity.

He has the potential to add another option to a talented, but sometimes frustrating Arsenal midfield. But with Arsene Wenger, it’s always going to come down to the price.

Real Madrid only had to pay £8m for Sahin (compare that to what Goetze’s priced at nowadays!) so you’d figure they’d be willing to let him go for a similar price. The only trouble Arsenal have is the danger of big-spending clubs like Malaga getting involved. At the moment neither club has guaranteed Champions League football next summer so it could just come down to money.

As much as I’d like to see Sahin at the Emirates, it’s important to be realistic. He’s got great potential, but Arsenal are never going to engage in a big transfer battle for him.

What’s your take? Can you see this transfer happening or will Wenger steer clear?

Sahin and Goetze are friends. There was a time when he was going to madrid because he had a friend there. Sign sahin and itll pull goetze to

  • nobert says:

He chose Madrid let him go elswhere. Just think we got enough in midfield positions

  • Rufas says:

Sahin who? We already have Jack n Diaby who are soon getting back and look far greater than him. He chose Madrid when we needed! Ramsey is to pick form and Rosicky is re-discovering himself. Arsenal ONLY need one striker.

    • Millz says:

Diaby is better than Sahin. Really?! Maybe we’re talking about a different cos the one I see (when he plays) makes bad decisions, holds the ball when he should pass, passes when he should hold it, and for the size of the guy tends to get muscled out of the game at times. Give me Sahin over him any day.

      • adiiii83 says:

If Sahin was that good, he would get some game time at Real Madrid…..I mean they have Khedira in front of him and he’s average at best…..I

      • Legolas says:

if ur a gooner u believe in ur team 😉 Diaby yes he got injured a lot but i bet all people that someday all will say WOW !!! Diaby came at the right time like all those who were criticizing rosicky 🙂 just man believe in ur team 🙂

        • doctor says:

I respect your loyalty none of our midfielders is as good as the form Nuri showed last season, maybe except Jack, but we’ll still need to wait and see how he fares after injuries, for Sahin is a definite yes

Yes he gets injured, and maybe he’s inconsistent with the ball but I’ve not seen him being outmuscled. Objectivity please. Plus I also think he has great potential and can be a hit if fit. Rosicky came back from hell, why can’t diaby pull it off as well?

Mr Wenger should stick to his tried players, what he needs is just a top central defender and a goal scoring indiviual to help RVP who at the moment is Arsenal’s play maker and score RVP reminds me when seeing the Hungerian Higibuti and Palatos who (alternated) thrashed England and Italy. That is the only player Mr Wenger needs to find.

top cb like vermalaen and kos.really some people pass commenting without ever watching arsenal play

  • Wenger says:

Sahin is top top quality, on his day is comparable to Fabregas and one of the very few players in the world who could replace Cesc. I doubt very much that Arsenal would have past up the chance to sign Sahin for £8m from Dortmund, he fits perfectly into Arsenals style of play. Arsenal need an improvement in quality not numbers, would prefer Vertonghen than Mertesacker but we won’t get him as we have enough at the back. Id be happy with close season if we signed Podolski, Sahin and Berbatov (Yes I did mean to write Berbatov) and get some players off books Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillaci, Almunia, Denílson and Bendtner.

  • kc says:

Sahin probably had reached his level, thats the reason he cannot exel at RM. Potential is one thing, but realising the potential and converting it to be the real deal, its the next step to being a great footballer. Unfortunately, most youngster fall at this point and become just another good team player

  • Adeel Rajput says:

Sahin is a gem of a player. He will easily be the best midfielder at the club and is an almost near replacement for Fabregas but with ronaldo style skills. We should sign him asap.

Lordgunner, I have been an Arsenal supporter since 1945, and have watched most of their games on television. Comparisons are odious, but I have my doubts whether you have seen the great players of the 1950/60 era, when it was a pleasure to watch soccer which was a man’s game with little or no gamesmanship as at present with players not ending millionaires. Mr Wenger has followed the European and Brazilian style of football, and English soccer in general have benefitted from it.I did’t have to watch or learn the art of football, because I was lucky to have watched the Wright, the Matthew, the Finney, Carter, Shakelton who distroyed the German team Puskas, Kocis, Stojaspal, Pele and several other greats who I have been able to see playing. As I said Mr Wenger needs only two possibly three players to have a team for the coming season.
