Why the time is right for Arsenal’s forgotten winger to make his move:

Whilst most of the fan focus around Arsenal has been on bringing in fresh talent to the club, the fact that Arsene Wenger and co also need to trim the chuff deserves due consideration. There are players that have failed to actualize the potential they showed as a youngster, there are players that quite clearly aren’t good enough to perform at the top end of the Premier League and there are players who just don’t seem motivated any more. If Arsenal are to rebuild and make a concerted title-charge next season, they’ll have to clear the decks whilst bringing in good replacements for those who have moved on.

At the moment the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Thomas Rosicky, Maroaune Chamakh and dare I say it, the perpetually injured Abou Diaby appear to be little more than dead weight. How the Gunners could do with getting them off the wage bill and then using that cash to fund moves for more desirable players.

Another player whose time is up is Carlos Vela. Fans don’t tend to talk about him much, despite his six years at the club. The truth is, since he moved to Real Sociedad on loan he has been more or less forgotten by the Arsenal faithful.

Perhaps this is because he hasn’t really managed to carve out a place in the Gunner’s first team, despite impressing sporadically. He arrived young and talented, with a couple of decent tricks in his bag and an excellent chip shot and a nagging inconsistency. But in truth, Arsenal’s chippy-chappy doesn’t appear to have developed or moved forward throughout his time at the club.

He was 17-years-old when he arrived at the club and he’s now 22. Is he really any better? If he is it’s difficult to tell – he wasn’t starting games with Arsenal and it’s been hard for him at Real Sociedad but he’s made 16 La Liga appearances and scored two goals. He’ll no doubt be happy to be getting the opportunities he just wasn’t getting with the Gunners. Why would he move back to North London to sit on the bench and watch his career stagnate further.

The good news for the Mexican International, if talkSPORT is to be believed is that there’s a good chance he’ll make his stay with Real Sociedad permanent. I think he’s better suited to La Liga and Real Sociedad are a team that are sure to offer him opportunities.

Arsenal need to trim their squad and Vela needs a move to further his career. If Sociedad are willing to take him on permanently then it’d be the perfect arrangement for everybody involved.

I can only assume you wrote this before yesterday’s game otherwise you wouldn’t have called Rosicky dead weight.

  • Roland C Rozario says:

Rosicky is still worth his stay at Arsenal…the Aston Villa game speaks quite a bit of the ‘old chappie’ who’s still worth the weight in gold in the ‘old goldies book’ notwithstanding his age… he was pretty explosive and played with his brain and feet!

  • left footed says:

    Players to trim…

    Manuel Almunia
    Sebastien Squillaci
    Abou Diaby
    Andrey Arshavin
    Marouane Chamakh
    Theo Walcott
    Carlos Vela
    Nicklas Bendtner
    Denilson

  • Bradster says:

If Vela had his chance like Walcott has, i’m sure you would’ve seen a great player develop. Only difference was the price of being english and media forcing Walcott in. like the others said, guess you didn’t see Rosiky yesterday.
