Manchester City are currently on the verge of crashing out of the Carling Cup after losing the 1st leg 1-0 to Liverpool. It is a situation that was totally unexpected at the start of the season given their squad depth and expensive signings.

Elimination from the Carling Cup means that City are now in contention for just two trophies. The Citizens were also knocked out of the F.A Cup by city rivals Manchester United having crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage.

However, these events could have a silver lining. Undoubtedly, the Premier League title is City’s main objective this season and anything short of that would be a massive disappointment. They have a 3 point lead at the top of the table but at this time of the season, every game is a final.

The ardous task of juggling three or four trophies together often leaves most teams exhausted in the long run. City however would have no such concerns. With Europa League games on alternating weekdays, they can conserve their resources and concentrate fully on the League.

Manchester United are in three competitions and their injury-hit squad would be stretched to the limit as they try to challenge on three fronts. Tottenham on the other hand still have the F.A Cup to worry about.

City’s Carling Cup exit is a minor disappointment and a missed opportunity given the two weak teams in the second semi-final. However, with a tough run of games coming up and an easier schedule than their title rivals, Manchester City could power their way to a long awaited League title.

What’s your take? Would Man City missing out on the Carling Cup final be such a crushing loss? Do City have bigger priorities? Let us know in the comment section below:
