Following the some what surprising sacking of Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock, owner Tony Fernandez has hired Mark Hughes as the man to keep them in the Premier League.
Fernandez cited Warnock’s lack of ability to spend finances wisely as the main reason for the change in management and since his appointment Hughes has been given a £30m war chest to bring in a “higher calibre” of player than Warnock could.
So which areas do Queens Park Rangers need the most improvement?
First of all despite Paddy Kenny being a good goalkeeper, he isn’t a world class stopper and if I was Hughes this would be one of the first areas I would look at. There are possibilities in England. Manchester United have Tomasz Kuszczak who has been after a move away from Old Trafford and also young Ben Amos could be a loan option. Then their is Carlo Cudicini who is warming the Tottenham bench.
Queens Park Rangers need a defender or two and Hughes may go to former club Blackburn Rovers to sign Chris Samba. Another ex Hughes player is Wayne Bridge, surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium. Another Manchester City seem keen to offload is Nedum Onuoha.
Keeping hold of Adel Taarabt will be a minor achievement but Hughes does have the element of persuasion about him. Queens Park Rangers are also in need of a wide midfielder and another hughes old boy Morten Gamst Pederson might be on the radar. A cheeky loan bid for Manchester City’s Adam Johnson could prove fruitful.
Finally and maybe most crucially QPR need a goal getter. Choices are thin on the ground in this department but Hughes could go back to former club Fulham and test their resolve with a bid for Bobby Zamora.
What Hughes did at Manchester City was buy players who perform consistently in the Premier League. I see him doing the same here even if Tony Fernandez wants higher calibre players. Let Hughes get players in who will keep QPR in the league and then in the summer let him attract the bigger names.

Hughes needs to sign someone to play in central midfield as replacement for Faurlin.

I’m glad you’re not Hughes then – have a look at his saves from Yakubu and Waghorn during the Leicester game last season. Cerny (bad back and all) kept the score respectable against Liverpool and has been more than able when called on.
We’re crap along the back 4 with the exception of Luke Young. Seeing 6’4″ Fitz Hall getting mullered for every header by 5’8″ Shane Long means we should break the bank for Samba – if PSG don’t turn his head. Alex would be good value for £3m as well.
Zamora offers us little more than Bothroyd and despite the fact that I’d probably net double figures in the SPL I’d put a cheeky bid in for Jelavic from Rangers.
