Do Tom Cleverley, Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison have what it takes to fill the gap left by the Ginger Prince?

|

There have been many articles written about Paul Scholes over the course of the last few months.

I will try to avoid being sycophantic (people must be sick of hearing how wonderful he was) and instead focus on who has the necessary attributes to replace the amazing, graceful and brilliant enigma that is Paul Scholes .

The names currently coming through the youth system that are causing excitement include Ravel Morrisson and Paul Pogba, both of whom are yet to be tested on the professional circuit.

I’ll start with Tom Cleverley. A player that has impressed at Wigan this season and has shown glimpses of talent worthy of a club like Manchester United, he has been touted as David Beckham’s long awaited successor.

Although he plays primarily starts on the wing, there are people at Old Trafford who believe he has the ability to move into the middle and slot into the playmaker role vacated by Scholes.

Voted player of the season for Watford after a spell at Leicester in League 1, he proved a valuable asset for Wigan Athletic and Roberto Martinez in their remarkable escape from relegation.

Having performed admirably for these clubs through the leagues and building quite an impressive C.V, the next step up will prove considerably more difficult.

Caught up in a transfer storm between La Harve and the Red Devils, who supposedly illegally poached the starlet, Pogba is causing a great deal of excitement behind the scenes.

He has a penchant for the spectacular and his athletic ability combined with excellent dribbling skills highlights his undoubted potential.

That said, he would arguably represent a different type of midfielder to Scholes, who was renowned more for his ability to pick apart defences than taking players on and strength.

The ‘teenage prodigy’ Ravel Morrison is perhaps the most intriguing candidate.

He was upset when he wasn’t awarded the reserve team player of the year, conveying his frustration through the troublesome medium of Twitter.

Off the pitch, he has been in trouble with the law on numerous occasions and there are concerns that he doesn’t have the attitude or maturity to handle professional football.

That would not be a characteristic which would resonate well with Ferguson, who has demonstrated ruthless measures to ensure that no individual believes he is too big for the club.

However, Morrison has earned the title ‘wonderkid’ via brilliant, solo performances for the reserves.

He has excellent balance, a blistering turn of pace and can is equally adept on either foot. The most compelling case for Morrison to replace the irreplaceable Scholes however is that he fits the archetypal role of ‘playmaker’ the most out of the three.

Whether Ferguson decides to buy talent or nurture it, the task to replace the revered little genius is unenviable, one that United need to address.

He has a pageant for the spectacular, does he? What is he – a beauty queen? Sure you didn’t mean ‘penchant’? All in all a dreadfully written piece by a wanna-be sports hack, hosted by a second rate site willing to give anyone their moment of glory in lieu of paying professional writers to do the job properly.

Hi ‘Timbo’. I apologize for the amateur mistake there. I had meant to use penchant but it must have automatically changed to pageant. Believe it or not, I am aware of what each word means. No excuse though, should have proof read more thoroughly. Mistake is corrected now. Hope my articles are more to your taste next time.

    Cheers.
