Can this ex-Liverpool man REALLY be a target for Manchester United?

According to Spanish radio station Radio Cadena Ser, former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is being strongly linked with Manchester United. After enjoying wonderful series’ of sustained form during his time with Liverpool, Alonso moved to Real Madrid during summer 2009. He has since been an important part of a side that arguably hasn’t been as successful as it should have been. I’m sure Alonso thought that when he moved to Madrid, he’d end up winning more than a single Copa del Rey in his first couple of seasons with the club.

Yet Barcelona are the leading team in Spain and both Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso have been forced to play second fiddle. Certain sources claim that Real’s capturing of Nuri Sahin along with already having Sami Khedira on their books may have Alonso considering his role at Madrid.

Somewhat tenuous reasons to suggest that the ex-Liverpool man may be willing to leave Madrid, but that’s the way some online publications work. What is clear, however is that Manchester United are in the market for a quality midfielder this summer. They’ve lost Paul Scholes and they’re on the lookout for a ‘long term replacement’. This desire/need on United’s part has meant that they’ve been linked to just about every decent midfielder under the sun.

I have to say that it strikes me that this latest rumour is just another concoction thrown out there by the media with the aim of riling fans up and pulling in hits. Alonso remains highly esteemed by Liverpool fans after confessing that he was sad to leave Liverpool back in 2009. As such any move to their rivals may be seen as an act of betrayal by the Anfield faithful.

If there is any truth to the rumour Liverpool fans may be wondering why he’s being linked to Manchester United whilst they are being linked to Charlie Adam – a player who you have to say has some way to go before being as well admired as Alonso.

You can’t help but feel that there’s no truth to the rumour however. Alonso speaks with great pride about his time with Liverpool and has a good deal of love for both the club and the city. He has too much respect for the fans to hurt them by joining one of their biggest rivals. Moreover, he appears to be completely happy at Madrid. With his place in the midfield pretty much nailed down, is there any call for him to move to United?

There’s no doubt that Liverpool fans will hope that there’s no truth to this story. I can’t help but feel that their hope wont be misplaced. There are no decent quotes or hard facts to suggest that it has any veracity. I fully expect Xabi Alonso to remain a Real Madrid player next season.

  • Paul says:

Alonso Will never play for them. He is happy to play for Real until such time we are ready to have him back. If he was ever contemplating coming back to the Prem this season he knows all he has to do is call the King and he would be back before the end of the week.

  • Billy says:

Got to agree with Zahid, Paul & Billy, utter claptrap, will never happen, the rumour probably started by the usual suspects & serial LFC haters namely The Sun and Mail.
