Jose Luis GayaArsenal’s search for defensive talent has seen them get linked to a lot of intriguing prospects this January. Now fans are just waiting to see who Arsene Wenger will have signed before the window slams shut.

Last week The Gunners were strongly linked to Valencia’s talented young left-back, Jose Luis Gaya. He’s only 19-years-old, but he’s already developed an excellent reputation.

He played 65 times for the Valencia B team over the last two years, before graduating to the first team. He’s already made 20 appearances this season (and has chipped in with a couple of goals as well).

H’s renowned for his pace and technique as well as his direct attacking nature. His marauding runs forward are a joy to behold and he loves to take defenders on. When he gets into a dangerous position he’s capable of picking out a neat cross (he’s got three assists to his name this season).

This brings me to the bad news. According to The Express, Arsenal have already had a £15m bid for the Luis Gaya dismissed. That shows how highly regarded he is within Spanish football. Things get even worse for Arsenal. The player recently confirmed that he’s in line for a new Valencia contract. Check out his comments here:

‘I’m calm, I’m in good hands and have a three-year contract. Discussing my renewal is a sign that things are going well for me, so I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.’

At this stage, Arsene Wenger needs to decide whether this is a player that’s worth pursuing. Does he view Jose Luis Gaya as a long-term replacement for Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal (who The Professor has previously hinted could be transformed into a centre-back in the future)?

Luis Gaya has now achieved wonderkid status and won’t be easy to sign. If he’s as good as so many pundits are making out, however, perhaps Arsene Wenger should cough up the cash?

What’s your take? Should Arsenal still be in the market for this Spanish starlet?
