Lassana DiarraIt’s clear to just about everyone that The Gunners are stuck in a defensive rut at the moment. Arsene Wenger failed to bring in enough reinforcements over the summer and the club is now paying the price for it. In all honesty, it’s a little too predictable. Fans and pundits saw it coming, so why didn’t Arsene Wenger?

With Arsenal season ticket prices rising by 3%, the fans have a right to wonder what happened here. Their manager (and the club’s hierarchy) has failed to keep their team competitive. It’s a damn shame, but there’s little that can be done about it before the January transfer window.

Arsenal’s only real option is to bring in a free agent. I’m sure the very idea of this will have Arsene Wenger breaking out in hives. He’s usually very precise in the transfer market. He doesn’t let squad issues dictate his choices, preferring instead to chase players that he has a real fancy for. That’s why he signed £42.4m Mesut Ozil, two summers ago, despite already being strong in the centre of the park.

But necessity may force a change in tact. Something’s got to give.

The Metro continues to link Arsenal to a variety of free agents, including Joseph Yobo, Diego Lugano and Lassana Diarra. In my opinion, only one of those players is good enough for Arsenal.

Joseph Yobo failed to make much of an impact at Norwich City. Diego Lugano had a similar struggle at West Brom (and was a supporter of Luis Suarez’s bitey approach to the World Cup). Lassana Diarra on the other hand, has a rather storied career.

He’s played for Chelsea, Real Madrid and even Arsenal (back in 2007). Arsene Wenger fancied him a few years back. Maybe he’d be willing to give him another shot now that he’s available as a free transfer?

Diarra has often struggled to hold down a regular place within the teams he has played for, but he did make 87 appearances for Real Madrid. What’s more, he’s 29-years-old, so he should offer an intriguing mix of experience and energy.

I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at this deal.

What’s your take? Is Lassana Diarra the right choice for The Gunners?
