ThomasVermaelenLiverpool have only recently wrapped up a deal for Dejan Lovren, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they were on the hunt for another centre-back this summer.

After all, the defense was by far the weakest area of The Reds squads last season. They conceded 50 Premier League goals over the course of the season. In the end, it’s fair to say that The Reds defensive lapses cost them the title. I’m not sure that their attacking players could have done much more.

Lovren, Southampton’s ex-superstar centre-back will ease their pain, but I can’t help but feel that another addition may be necessary.

With Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel getting on in years (and proving to be somewhat inconsistent), signing another centre-back looks like the smart move. Brendan Rodgers doesn’t want to be forced to turn to Kolo Toure, does he?

It’s not like there aren’t good options out there. According to The Mirror, The Reds are currently ‘weighing up a move’ for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen. I have a feeling this news will be met with mixed reviews.

After all, Vermaelen is fairly well regarded. There’s a reason why he was given the captaincy of a club like Arsenal. But it’s also worth noting that the big Belgian bruiser has been out of form and fitness for the best part of a year now.

With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the ascendancy at The Emirates, Vermaelen has struggled for game-time even when he has been fit. This is probably why he’s currently picking up links to clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United – he needs game time at a decent club if he’s to rescue his career.

Liverpool could provide him with an exit route and a shot a first team football. They’re also able to offer him Champions League football, which isn’t true of the likes of Manchester United.

With another Mirror article suggesting that Vermaelen could be available for as little as £10m, this strikes me as a no-brainer for The Reds. They need defensive options and Vermaelen needs a change of scenery. Isn’t this a match made in heaven?

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Thomas Vermaelen? Where will he play his football next season?
